Golo was right about the upcoming long power outtages in santiago area. After the new year's honeymoon is over, the power company has shown their true colors. Lights went out in many parts of santiago from around 12am last night and still out as we speak (10am saturday). Seems like a 12hr blackout. I have all the grocery that I bought and now it seems all will rot.
Light situation was OK in santiago for a few months up until recently. I hope this is not the beginning of a series of blackout nightmares as golo described in his past posts.

Blackouts?

AZB, Edenorte was promising this to happen starting on Christmas day. Did it happen and is Cabarete affected? Didn't the government pay their F@#$%N bill yet?

We had a couple of hrs with no power last night, not sure about the rest of Santo Domingo. I speculate it's going to get worse as of Jan 2, 2003, the honeymoon was over.

My New Years resolution should have been to get into the "planta" business :) Might help pay for the tripling of my electricity bills...

What you are seeing now is only the beginning. Things are only going to get worse. Everything is going up sky high including government expenses. As Codetel and other phone companies have increased rates, Hippo will have a nightmare covering phone bills for his bureaucracy. As oil goes up he will not be able to pay the power bills, so blackouts are only going to get worse. Notice that even the Distributors have now offered to buy out the 50% interest the government owes in the Capitalization of the CDE and wants to buy it with debts by Hippo.

The power companies have even pulled out of the social contracts with barrios like Capotillo, which promise to provide electricity 18 hrs a day if they continue to pay. But people are not paying anymore because they are not going to pay blackouts at outrageous prices. Trouble in the neighborhoods is brewing. Road construction and rebuilding in barrios have stopped and a hot spring and summer is coming with lots of riots. Navarrete and Licey Al Medio will explode. Even Gurabo will have problems.

The dollar will go up to $26 by the end of February, perhaps before. People like me who have dollar accounts from U.S. investments are only going to continue to hoard Uncle Sams best because there is no other security or confidence left in this government. People are not speculating, they are just using a defense mechanism. The peso is dead as a currency and we live in a pseudo dollar economy now. Buying dollars is the only way out. There is no turning back to a healthy peso, unless Hippo takes action he is not willing to take now with reelection for his party in the process. They will try to fool the people one more time giving away money and "botellas". It will not work. Leonel seems now the one to catch.

The Pan Am Games will be the crucifiction of Hippos government. The games will be a major failure. People will not buy tickets to see second rate olympics, even if the U.S. Dream Team comes. Cuba may pull another trick and not show in view of the dangers of losing some of his best athletes with the well known plans by Dominican mafiosi lawyers and government figures with lots of power who are planning to convince Cuban stars to defect and gain a heavy commission selling these stars to professional teams. Cuban boxers and baseball players are the most susceptible. If I were Fidel I would stay out with the vultures waiting. The transportation system for the games is in chaos even now. There is no fuel for OMSA buses with A/C bought for the games and they are beginning to break down and repairs are expensive as hell. The buses are now being used in the streets to replace the regular buses which are almost non-existent due to breakdowns. People are now being forced to ride $10 buses.
The Americas highway will be a death trap in 2003 with no medical help in sight.

Santiago will become one traffic jam with the new airport and new hotel and all the "progress". It will be almost impossible to drive there anymore and prices will match Santo Domingo. The honeymoon is over there. Pay up for trying to become #1. Did you know that Santiago is now the #1 city in the country? With the breakdown of Santo Domingo into four municipalities, the city of Santo Domingo under Roberto Salcedo is now #2 behind Santiago.

Santiago is already beginning to ressemble santo Domingo at certain rush hour times. The pile-up of cars at the bartalome Colon and Extrella Sadhala intersection will set you back 15-20 minutes at certain times if you are coming in from Bartalome colon ave. The intersections like Juan Pablo Duarte and 27th of feb avenues are also jammed with the intersection of estrella Sadhala at ruch times. I can see that in a few years we will be just like Santo Domingo in all the ways. prices of housing are going up. We all have to pay high prices for rent electric, water and parking in certain parts of the city. People complain of the lack of parking and the traffic jams near my office building. Simply no where to park. Maybe I should think about not buying my house in santiago city area and, perhaps, move more towards moca - santiago area from auto pista duarte. But wait, the new hotel and the hospital will take me back to square one again :(
