Do the IC's there work pretty much the same way as in the States? Are they very slow there?
Can you bring a disk with info to send to someone as an attachment, etc?
I will be there about 6 mo.
Do surge protectors work to protect a modem from blackouts? I have a laptop.
thanks, sophia

Internet works the same way in the DR. You should have no problem. Computers are all the same. You can use disks.

Expect for power outages, everything is the same.

Plenty of internet cafes available in most areas where foreigners are likely to be. Depending of whether the service available in that area, many have DSL. Talk with person in charge about disks; most likely that person will control the machine that permits the disk to be sent. Surge protectors not only effective, they are very important here. I don't know whether the IC will let you use your own laptop, you may be required to use one of the computers that are provided. Charges are usually about RD$40-50/hour.

if you do use a PC with a modem, use a surge protector for the modem line too. You can get them at most computer stores up here. I have already lost one modem that way...
