All you need is a passport to open an account and in most cases RD$100. All dpends on the type of account you need? Read the archives and do a search for in-depth answers.

It is very easy to open an account in pesos, but more difficult in dollars. To open an account in dollars there is a waiting period and you need references

I guess that it depends on the bank. I have an account in US$ at Banco de Reservas. Show up, bring your cedula and US$200.00 and you will walk out with a little book that says you have US$200.00 somewhere in the banking system.

When I opened my accounts at Progreso I had to have letters of reference from my Canadian bank and my US account had to have at least $500.00. Peso account was negligible though. I also had an address in the D.R. I went to three banks before they would open the accounts even with letters of reference. Maybe because I was a woman!!! Says something about the workings of the bureaucracy. I also had to have my passport and Canadian Drivers License.
