Just flew back from DR this morning. I spent four days there this time and wanted to share an account of another adventure in La Isla del Encanto.
5AM-Day One. Hardly slept the night, fueled by the expectations. My girlfriend is late picking me up, and I?m biting my fingernails. We arrive to the airport on time and meet a third friend. We huddle in excitement.
I look for Musicqueen, knowing she?s on the same flight. We had agreed that intuitively we would recognized each other and we did. We sit and chit-chatt waiting to board as we share anticipation.
The flight is uneventful and the Tweny car rental rep picks me up and I retrieve ?my car.? I?m on my way to Bavaro. ?My man? is there, I haven?t seen him for five weeks and I?m eager to share time with him before he goes to work. I remind myself to keep a steady and safe speed on the road.
I do my usual. Love the road from Boca Chica to San Pedro de Macoris, a wide open ?autopista.? The many shades of the Caribbean sea escort you and then the road deviates to the outskirts of San Pedro. I cross a green, minor bridge over a lovely river, pass through a little bit of traffic through and industrial zone and back out again on the open road. To the right sugar cane ?ingenios? remind me so much of my childhood in Cuba; the fields look very familiar
The radio blasts Merenge and Bachata and I know I?m home. The more I get involved with DR, the more I feel I live there and work in Miami. I climb a tall hill and around the bind another beautiful river makes my heart swell.
I curse ?los policias acostados? that make me slow down in Limon and finally arrive to La Romana. I stop at Jumbo and pick up the essentials. Water, Brugal, limes, ham, cheese, fruit, a cooked chicken, and ?crema de leche? and ?pirulis? for the multiple requests from the folks at work.
Right after Chevere I turn into a non-paved road. It cuts through more sugar cane fields, directly unto the road to Bavaro, circumventing Higuey. (Saving about a ? hour.) Felix, (mi pareja) had told me about it and I hesitate to turn considering the unknown but, what the heck..
??more later?..;-)
