I'm planning to re-locate to the East Coast Higuey region, I'm American and my plan is to live in DR for a year, although I will rely mostly on my savings to function...if I wanted to do some part time work is it necessary to be a resident to get work ? Are temporary work visas available and if so what is the process?

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a "working permit" or "work authorization" under Dominican immigration law. If the person planning to work in the D.R. does not want to petition for a residency permit, which automatically grants him the right to work in the country, he may apply for a residency or business visa for labor purposes ("Visa de Negocios con Fines Laborales") and renew it every year.

The following documents are required for a business visa for labor purposes:

1. Labor contract, legalized by the Ministry of Labor.
2. Tourist card.
3. Two copies of entire passport.
2. A certificate of good conduct from the Dominican authorities.
9. Medical exams (blood test and chest x-rays) performed in the Dominican Republic.
10. 4 photos 2 x 2 (front).
12. Visa application form
