You Only Need it at the Other End
Usually airport prices for RD$ in US, Canada, UK are truly horrible and thus when you arrive buy your tourist card (which is $10US and not pesos) - go to the banco reservas office in the airport and get non-ripped off.
En route of course, pesos are unnecessary and the commission etc., makes buying outside the DR a bad idea.

don't change your pounds into pesos in lloyds, natwest, hsbc or any other place in the u.k.
get u.s dollar travellers cheques and some cash - it is better if the cash you get is in denominations of $20 and under.
don't use pounds here, they will change them for you, but at a crappy rate.
only change what you need when you get here. if you have some pesos when you leave, you can change some back to dollars, but keep the receipts the bank (banreservas) gives you.
thomas cook, etc. will change pesos into pounds, when you get back, but again at a crappy rate.

Came and Left last week
Was there the 17th to the 25th - I left early on the 25th hence I did not go into the capital on the 24th for the meet and greet - it slipped my mind that it was the night before I left.
I am coming back the 28th through the 6th of July though.
