Well, we did it! We bought a house in the D.R.

With months of research from North to South, we made the decision to finally purchase in the North in a place by the name of Sosua.

It all began back in Jan. in Bayahibe. Having been in this area 4 times, I researched this area for real estate. Prices were high and my spirits were low until I got on this board for help. My research was redirected to the North Coast by JanH's thread on " Our experience in buying a home in Sosua ". Things were never the same again.

There were many contacts made with real estate agencies in this area and in Samana, but again with Jan's recommendation we contacted Dean Brown of Century 21. Dean provided us with outstanding service from the 1st phone call to the final escort to the airport. He was professional, thorough and honest, which made us feel comfortable with the decision we made.

With only 2 hrs of sleep, we arrived in Pop early in the morning and were net by Dean. He took us to our condo and gave us some time to freshen up before picking us up again for lunch. After having a wonderful lunch on the beach in Cabarete, he preceded to drive us through the areas of all the houses that he had scheduled for the next day. Our heads by this time was spinning and our sense of direction did not exist. He brought us back to the condo. Instead of resting, we ventured out to find a grocery store and buy everything we needed. We were certainly impressed with the variety and prices. Just like back home. Back to the condo, but this time for a snooze. We stayed at Condos Dominicanos, which was at our request to Dean that we stay there. We wanted to experience life in Sosua, and we did. "When in Rome, do like the Romans", or so they say. We ate at Rocky's that evening and also met Marco. I had already emailed Marco various times, and found him to be a great source of info. It was a pleasure to meet him that evening and even better, the garlic chicken we ordered. We came back frequently for breakfast and some El Presidentes on those hot afternoons.

Our 2nd day was spent viewing all the houses that were of interest to us. What a confusing day this was. All houses shown on the real estate web sites are one thing and when seen in person are another thing. The original house that we were in love with, turned out to be a disappointment. Live and learn.

I spoke with various people through email who had also purchased homes in Sosua, and all of them shared their experiences about their purchases. The one thing that seemed to be a priority to all was the area and some form of security to ensure piece of mind when back home in their country. To live there is one thing, but to own a vacation home requires a certain amount of security when not there. I also learned that a lot of these homes for sale are not occupied by the owners themselves, but by renters. Many of these renters are happy where they are and personally hope that the house does not sell. Dean even had a phonecall from one of the renters the following day after we viewed the house, concerned that we might have liked the house and he would have to move.

The original house that Dean had suggested in the beginning of our many phone calls and emails was the one that we in fact purchased. In the end, with all the homes that we viewed from Cabarete to Sosua, this home was the one all along. It is in a secure area called Escondido Bay (Playa Laguna), 5-7 min. walk to a beautiful secluded beach that has a pathway with steps cascading through coral rock walls and luscious vegetation. Just the walk to the beach brings serenity to the soul. It is a 4-5 min. drive into Sosua, and walking distance to a grocery store. It has a beautiful terrace along the entire back length of the house that overlooks a pool, a jacuzzi, a pavilion and a beautiful lusciously landscaped yard with privacy and just enough open space to catch those afternoon winds flowing through the house.

All the time spent researching and communicating with others, has certainly paid off. This was a dream of mine for many years. The D.R. had always felt right to me. The landuage, the music, the people abd the land are to me the most beautiful. Must be the Latin blood in me.

We have to thank the DR1 board for providing us with all of its information, as well as to all the members on the DR1 that responded back to my questions back in Feb. and March. We especially want to thank JanH, Ken and his wife, ecarignan, Jazzcom, Marco from Rocky's, Ron and Agnes for the condo they provided, Eddie from Condos Dominicanos, and of course Dean Brown from Century21 who is still in contact and helping us to set up. Also, to all those that are always reading these forums but never sign in. Thanks so much for your help in achieving THE DREAM.

We will soon have the pictures to show. We're going back the beginning of Aug. to set up what ever is needed to begin enjoying our place.

Thank you
Anabela and Alex

I am glad that I received an honorable mention:) I try to give information but sometimes I give it with tough love. Ask for me in Rockys when you get back to town. I will be there from the 16th of July to the end of August.

Last month I bought a condo in El Neptuno so I could be close to Ken and I am going down to fix it up. I am looking forward to putting my dreckerating skills to work in the DR. I just have to use some carribean flair that I am not 100% sure I have yet but I will:)

I put up a website to rent my condo when I am not there and it has been up for about 3-4 weeks now. I already have 5 weeks booked and one stay already over. This is funner than I thought it would be.

Congrats on your purchase. I just hope you gave it plenty of thought and know what you are in for.

I bought a building lot on the hilly side of the road just past your place across from Sea Horse Ranch in Lomas Mironas. About 5/8ths of an acre with a beautiful view. I may just build a home there if my condo keeps renting like it is and rent that out weekly as well.

If there is anything I can help you with email me from the link right under this message. Seems as if you have started your own network of good people already. People that live there have said that they can't believe the network of friends I have there and dont even live there full time.

If you are planning on being in town for Thanksgiving put my dinner down on your social calendar now. I get a big group of people together and we take over Rockys. Had 48 people to dinner and 60 people show for my Easter dinner. My get togethers ROCK.

Marco started a Sosua only message board if you want to check it out. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sosuainfoclub/
Regards,
Scott

Congratulations, very happy that it worked out so well for you. Soon we will have enough living here to have our own "dr1 reunions".

BTW, don't be upset by Escott's attempts to shift the focus of this thread to him. That's just the way he is. But a nice person in spite of his need for attention.

Felicidados!

When you get all settled in light a flare from your house and we'll look for you from here and know exactly where you're at. Alba and I have a place just out past Lomas Mironas and Haciendas El Choco with a view of the whole area from Sosua to Cabarete. You can check out pictures from the web link in our profiler.

Hope to get acquainted sometime, neighbor. Welcome!

Thanks for mentioning me, Anabela. Always glad to help the many people who email me through this forum. Also, glad we finally got to talk by phone after you bought the house.

We'll be down on the 17th to finish furnishing our villa. Then it'll be available for rent. As I said before, we are only renting to people we know from our hometown.

Since your neighborhood is just down the road from ours (Casa Linda), Doug & I will drive by to get a better look at it. But from the pictures you sent me, it's just beautiful.

How about emailing me with specific directions to the house?

Anabella,

Congrats on your purchase, turned out to be much nicer than the one you were previously looking at. You sent me those pictures but I can't seem to reply to your e-mail. Send me an e-mail, I'd like to get more info about your purchase.

Seems like dean from Century 21 is well liked by the folks from North America. He will be my next recommendation for people looking to buy, although I was pleased with my realtor; Palm Hills.

Congrats and it's nice to have another canadian join the group in Sosua. It's a lovely house you bought.

Rocky's

By the way, last time I was in the DR 2 months ago, I was looking for a place to have a Presidente quietly in Sosua. I was looking for Rocky's but never found it. Where is Rocky's? I ended up in a bar that had some people and was joined within seconds by 2 young girls wanting my US dollars for sex. Is that common in Sosua, I ended up going to Cabarete on the beach for drinks for the rest of my vacation. I may be drifting away from the subject though.

Thanks to everyone!

We're excited. It took months of research and it certainly has paid off so far. Everyone says that the fun will now begin when we go back to shop for things we need for our paradise home. The 2 wks in Sosua were spent researching the area and viewing houses. We did not have a chance to get out to see Santiago and look for things we will now need to buy. The villa is furnished with the necessary furniture, but we will need to buy dishes, towels, etc. Since I am not a big shopper, this may not be fun. I'm the type that walks into a store, buy what I need, pay and walk out. Anyone out there able to guide me to a shopping area that I can just pick up everything we need?

Jan, I will email the directions soon. You may even walk to it from your place. Just watchout for the moto-conchos on the highway.

Eric, you must have ended up at some cute little bar that night. Rocky's is located on Dr Rosen. Down Pedro Clisante and turn right on Dr Rosen. A man without a partner in Sosua is a magnet for the young Dominican women. Money talks.

Gracias

Ha ha ha ha! Jolly joker! Walk in and walk out! Ha ha! Pay and be done! Ha ha ha ha ha! One store with everything you need! Ja ja ja ja JA jaja!

:: wiping tears from eyes ::

The trick is trying to convince them to TAKE your money. My experience has been that every store from the ferreteria down the street to Codetel and Ede Norte make it as difficult as possible for anyone to actually but anything from them.

Well, La Sirena in Santiago is about as close to a K-Mart or Wal-Mart as you'll get around here. This is NOT a shopper's paradise.

Drift away. We have a week or two to kill while Anabela goes shopping. The only thing that isn't difficult to purchase in Sosua is your two young friends for sex. Codetel could learn something about doing business from them. YES that is normal.

To find Rocky's enter Sosua at the Texaco station. This is Calle Dr. Rosen. Go straight through the intersection. You'll see a Harrison's jewelry shop on the corner on the right, then a bar ebing rebuilt. Rocky's is the next on the right, immediately before the little supermercado. Say "Hi" to Marco from Xanadu.

It is not really common Eric. They usually ask for Pesos and not dollars:) Cabarete is the same way.

Should have just asked someone where Rockys is. Most people will know where it is.

Oh, what bar did you say you found? LOL

Anabella,
I purchased sheets and towels in the US and am bringing them down in a suitcase. I packed me one of those dominican type suitcases, you know, the one that looks like three people can be buried in?

Figured it would be easier than running around Puerto Plata for that sort of stuff.

When Palmas and I talked, I told her how we packed our sheets, etc., but thought it would be helpful for others too.

We, like Jazzcom, bought all of our linens in the states. This includes 6 pillows, 3 comforters, towels, sheets, quilts, air mattress. We got all of this in 2 30" suitcases.

We bought Space Bags. It's one of those "As Seen on TV" products. We bought them online. .Space Bags They're clear heavy-duty plastic bags. Each one has a nozzle-like thing that you use your vacuum cleaner hose to suck all the air out. 4 bed pillows in one bag was reduced to about 3 inches thick. They have hanging bags too for clothes. We brought alot of clothes down to leave at the house.

Jazzcom - Good thing you packed 'em instead of buying in POP. I've looked at the sheets, towels, etc., in some of the stores in Puerta Plata. I didn't like the quality. You probably wouldn't either

Nah, not really. I have been in Sosua for years, do you think I need to know where to find gals? Heck I just stand in the street and put up 1 finger if I want one and 2 fingers if I want 2. They come running over and I take my pick. Gals in the DR is a non issue even for fat loud ugly americans with a hairy back like myself!

Janh... The manager offered to pick me up seconds in Puerto Plata at 100 pesos for Bath towels because my Condo needed some and I got this awful feeling that I would be throwing them out when I arrived. I bought some nice stuff at Marshalls. I am going to go back tomorrow to buy xtras since they all match and I don't want to take a chance on losing any etc..

Too bad I cant bring down appliances and furnishings easier.

Scott - would you believe i'm taking down a mini-shop vac this time? it fits in one of our deep suitcases! bringing clocks too. packed throw rugs last time. just wish i could fit in a lamp!

there's a nice furniture accessories store across the large ferriteria as soon as you get in POP. The store is in a strip mall across the street on the right. it was the first store i went in that had caribbean-style accessories, like you can get EVERYWHERE in US! Stuff is not real cheap; tried to bargain with them; they wouldn't budge. Really wanted this lamp with pineapple wood carved base and leaves were metal. it was $135US. not expensive for US, but didn't want to pay that much for house down there. I offered $100 and they refused. Guess their business is good.
