I was just looking at the voting for the all star game and was not surprised to notice several Dominican superstars on the list. I think its remarkable that such a small country can produce so mant tremendous athletes. It's even more remarkable when you consider how many young athletic boys go unnoticed by scouts because their families are deeply mired in poverty and cannot afford to buy equipment to play. I recently watched a special on the Mets shortstop Jose Reyes. Jose was a teenager in Gonzalez when someone familiar with MLB told his father that Jose would have to move to a major city in DR if he was ever to be recognized by a major league scout. Jose moved to Santiago and two years later he is twenty years old and the Mets starting shortstop. I wonder how many talented young men waste away in the campo playing dominoes and living in poverty when they could have been playing professional baseball and making millions.
