Did I understand DR1 news correctly todaythet our friendly leader is telling the business community that if they DON'T do as he says & without protest through the Supreme Court, then he will DOUBLE the taxes he has illegally placed on them?? Do the courts not have the right to protect the business community from thugs like HIM?

Then, to make matters worse, the silly SOD (Yes, he is getting me REAL mad now) goes & says "If you let me have your US $'s cheaper than you can sell them elsewhere, then I won't charge you the 5% I was going to illegally charge you"!! I bet that if the business groups DID agree to this (& it would be stupid & cowardly of them to do so) then Hippo would pay with Banco Central cheques that would bounce all the way back to Doomsday!!

Does he REALLY believe that being President makes him the Son of God that can do no wrong & that his every wish has to be adhered to without question?? I think he is trying to mould himself in the ways of Trujillo or early Balaguer without any of the charm or charisma that previous dictators had!!

Ooops, another knocking at the door from the PPH heavies!!! - Grahame.

Speaking of which, has anybody heard from Golo lately? I thought for sure he'd have some juicy comments about, well, everything.

Grahame, this is obviously a rhetorical question because we all know the answer -- of course he does! It's been obvious from the start of his Administration (if you can call it that!).

If we MUST have a dictator,

can't it be someone with a little class and panash - like Balaguer? Hugo Chavez looks quite the sophisticat in comparison to this (fill in your favorite mother-related explative).

Someone has to pay for the gold medals. Wasnt it you whom I saw on TV cheering the Dominican sailing team? Just joking.hehehe!

Besides, who is going to pay for the Banco Central Certificates? Remember, there is only US$230 million left in the vault.

Frankly my dear, as much as I hate "El Come Yerba" I want to see the following happen or ordered by decree:

1)I want to see the gallon of regular gas go to $100 pesos next week. Maybe this way I will be able to press my aluminum pedals all the way to the floor at Lincoln Avenue. No, Maybe perhaps $200 per gallon so concho drivers have to increase the fare to $50 pesos and a few chopos stay home rather than loitering the streets.

2)I want license plates to cost $10,000 for all cars for the same reason. Lets get the junkies out of circulation. Force bikers to pay the same. Place a toll on bikes at our highways($30 each way)

3)Charge a $200,000 fee to colmadones for hi-fi equipment usage and a royalty fee for all music played.

4)Charge a $250,000 for "drinking" water truck license. And then let the people who buy that water die slowly of stomach cancer.

5)Charge a $250,000 for any mobile loudspeaking systems announcing products or services in the streets.

6)Charge $1000 license plate to mobile street vendors.

7)Place a people toll at each entrance at El Conde. $10 fee to walk. $500 fine for spitting and pissing. $10 tax on every "Bon" ice cream. I would not buy one anyway. Charge to walk at El Malecon. Charge a $1,000,000 fee to sell fake paintings at Malecon. $10 betting fee per person at every "Banca de Apuestas".

8)Create a Haitian tax. Charge $50,000 for every visa. Create a Haitian Dominican cedula to get a construction job-cost-$$10,000.
Offer $5000 to every Haitian who leaves the country and use the money for a wall to wall high voltage border. The same for Chinese, specially those who play ping-pong(I dont want to ever see another chinese singing the Dominican Anthem after a gold medal......"Quisquelano valente alcemo nuetlo canto conlible emeotion, si el mundo la pa otlendemo, nuetlo canto con lible blah blah!!!!!!" "Quielo un chin"

9)Charge a $50,000 exit visa fee to every woman who leaves DR to Europe. They can pay it easily with their prostitution income, estimated at US$7 billion, twice what Dominicans in the U.S.A., who really do real work for a living(except our drug boys)

10)Charge US$50 for every cardboard box brought in any arriving flight to DR. $10 for every 10 feet of "soga" to wrap the boxes. $1000 for every piece of luggage that does not fit in the small compartment. Charge US$200 to wear crazy hairstyles like the ones from Curazao flights. Charge a tattoo tax..$50 pesos per. Plus my favorite hate wrap....$200 tax for anyone who does plastic wrap at the airport-The ultimate chopo invention at the airports.

Any other ideas???????????????????????????????????????

Not all the women who go to Europe go to prostitute themselves. Some go to actually spend their money there. But I am willing to vote yes if you agree to pay for it every time I travel.

You're always so cheery and happy. A bundle of joy. ;)

You are right Dominican women shop in Europe for condoms, sheer stockings, red high heels, viagra pills for their no-lift old timers, rubber toys and cheap perfume.

Please, convince me that a 7am every morning you decent ladies stand up all the way to Lincoln Avenue from the Netherlands Embassy in Piantini and the Avenida Independencia chopo crowd at the Spanish Consulate to go shopping at Armanis in Milano.

I wouldn't know. Never been to the Netherlands and never been to Spain.

If I promise that I haven't bought any of that and will not do, are you still willing to pay for my tax?

Why dont I recommend a few countries to visit which do not have the prostitution mystique. No matter what you say or do, all Dominican women who travel to some places will be judged as equals(prostitutes)

While there are few countries left without Domincan prostitutes showing their butts, perhaps you ought to try Monaco. Chile might be the choice in South America. Some parts of Argentina may be free of our gals, even though at last count there are 3000 in Buenos Aires under a ring dominated by a Dominican consulate official.

I understand, in Europe alone there are close to 300,000 Dominican women in this trade, with cities like Madrid and Barcelona with almost one in every corner. The trade between Curazao and the Netherlands fits in the same ring. They use the same visa back and forth.

Brazil has so many local whores they dont need Dominicans. So try Brazil. Plus the next Pan Am games are there. Poor Brazilians will now have to pay for this waste of effort and money.

Ok. I don't deny that there might be 10 zillion Dominican prostitues abroad. What I am saying is that not ALL Dominican women who travel to Europe are prostitutes. Get it?

So, I vote for your proposal, but you pay for my tax when I travel. Do we have deal?

I will submit your proposal to Tony Turbi. Maybe he will come up with a plan to pay your tax.

But I will make an amendment to my plan. The tax would not be collected if your address is outside of a barrio. For instance, if you have lived for more than 10 years in Naco, Piantini or some place like that and show a passport with visitors visas with quick returns, and a steady job in DR with uninterrupted tenure, then you will be considered free of the prostitute tag.

Better yet, let this be just a chopo tax. All chopo woemn must pay it. If they pay it simply means they accept they are prostitutes. No other way to pay for it.

Of Hippos, Babes & Europe

Mr. G., Good luck with the PPH-goons. The Hippo has this grandeur image of himself, he might well think he is a celestial being. Last I heard, the European Union and especially the Euro central bank were following his decisions closely, so they can give him a piece of their mind, the next time he knocks at their door .

Lo siento, Golo. Pib is right. I know of the rows of people near Piantini at the Netherlands embassy. Most of these applicants want to visit Curacao or St Maarten, Dutch territory for trade or familybizzniz. You write that they can use the same visa to go on to the Netherlands, back and forth. My friend, go get your money back ! Whoever told you this fairy tale was smoking something.
May I remind you that the Netherlands is part of the Schengen-fortress ? (the accord of the European Union that regulates entry to their territory) It is totally impossible to travel to Holland with a Curacao-entry visa. Spain has a somewhat more liberal visa-regime, partly because of historical ties with South America. This will not last, as all Euro-countries want compliance to a uniform code.
On the female tourists really being prostitutes : same difference.
Yes there are dominican prostitutes in Europe, but most of the numbers are vastly exagerated. White, easteuropean girls have taken over.
I invite you to visit Amsterdam, go to the Bugatti bar (a favorite wateringhole of Dominican expats here) and you'll get to see some real classy compatriots.

I have a question:

7 billions means about 140 000 professional making $50 000 a year

If they work at 1000 peso per contact and the pesos are valued at 35 to the dollar (average last year) it means; they need five contacts a day for 6 days per week

There ain't 140 000 professional here. In fact there ain't 16 000 pro working full time 5 days a week.

I assume that your number include the multiplier effect for hotel, AI resort, taxi, airlines.....

Is That the correct interpretation?

Since the total GDP is about 50 billions does it means that one should expect the government to create an incentive program to generate more revenue from this sector of business.

There are a few in Monaco but they do not look the part. There is a name for them ...they are gigolette.

I can certify that there are a few dozens in Santiago de Chile and about 10 in La Paz Bolivia (They work in disco attached to Chinese restaurant and also in a Gentleman club in the better part of the city.)
