I have seen pictures from this camera and the results are very stunning. The LCD display shows bright images (what you see you capture). Even in low light it takes great pictures. The downside is that the camera runs into some mechanical troubles. I am not exactly sure what it is but sales man told me from bestbuy electronic store is that the mechanism to close and open the lens cover gets stuck thus preventing the camera from operating or using the zoom feature. This body design has many return in that store.
Ask escott, he has a camera in the same body shape. He too had problems with it but I think he has figured out a way to solve it.
Good luck, the cameras are very expensive here.

AZB...

I take it you would recommend buying a digital movie camera in Canada/US, before landing there?

I've decided to buy one for an experiment I want to try... digital frames captured and transferred to a computer art program for digital composition.

I guess it's a matter of USB connections for one's computer?

Friends bought one and they love it; don't know which camera, but they purchased at Costco for under $1000 Canadian.

There seemed to be little loss of detail with the zoom, and it's a much improved way to capture the exact moment one wishes to capture.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Almost all digital cameras come with USB interface. Just simply connect and you are in business.
I suggest buying cameras from USA vs DR. You have far more variety there and if something goes bad, you can return it without problems. Here, we have older models with the prices of the newer model cameras. The prices are often much higher than you would pay in USA or canada. Plus you have specials and close-out bargains that you would never get here.

Here is a few hints when buying a camera:

Check to see how much memory you are getting with the camera. Some cameras give you 8megs, some give you 16 megs and some alot more. Its true you can always buy more memory.

Check to see what type of batteries it requires. make sure the camera requieres AAA or AA batteries that can be bought as rechargeable and reused numerous times. Use Nickle metal hydride rechargeable batteries. they are memery-free and last longer. Watch out there are some cameras that use special batteries that can only be bought from the manufecturer. That can become a costly business.

Check to see how much the camera has optical zoom. Digital zoom is worthless. never use digital zoom or you will compromise quality. 3X optical zoom is very good.

Check to see what type of a lens you are getting ex: kodak has models that use carl zies (not sure of spelling) lens. thats a very good german lens so don't be fooled by the name Kodak. Panasonic sometimes uses Leica lens. If you have a camera with that lens, you are a winner. Ultimately, the picture quality depends on the CCD chip but its good to have all the fine quality components to get a good shot.

Now also check to see if the LCD-display shows a bright image in dim light conditions? Remember, what you see on the LCD display is what you get in the camera.

How big of a flash you are getting on the camera?

How many Mega Pix are you getting for the price? 3 megs are more than enough if you are an average photo shooter (not a fanatic).

I can go on and on but I will stop here.
Anyone else wants to add more to this?

thanks so much!

This is great info, AZB. I've saved it for printing later.

I've just had a terrible thought... we are talking about a video camera, right? I said movie camera, but that's not right.

I am ignorant about specs, but am asking because the mb requirements sound low.

I hope I haven't wasted your time by not being clear with my question!

I automatically thought digital video because I had read about your movie-making for the DR1 parties.

It's definitely a video camera that I'm trying to buy.

One other thought... I would assume travelers come and go with cameras in all the time, so they're not dutiable? Do DR residents ask someone in the US to purchase such an item and bring it down for them?

AZB was talking about a dicital still cam. As far as what to look for in a digital video camera, here's a good Top 10 list that I used when purchasing my camera which I am very pleased with. The only other thing you should worry about is picking a good brand that is recognizable so that you have alot options when purchasing accessories or receiving technical support. Most major companies such as Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Samsung, and JVC are good. I would recommend Canon and Samsung. Sony is good if you have alot of their other products such as a VAIO desktop, Still Camerea, Cleio PDA, etc. Hope that helps.

Sorry AZB-- that was a great post and I screwed up. The info will come in handy, I'm sure.

JDub,

Thanks. I appreciate that list, will spend some time looking. I was amazed when I saw what friends were doing with their camera. They made short videos of a son's hockey games, downloaded the videos to their computer in no time, and posted frames for the team's website.

The coolest thing was that each shot could be re-framed and zoomed with little loss of detail, at least I didn't notice any loss. This will be invaluable in playing with compositions.

technology is grand ... sometimes. :)

PS Hlywud... thanks for PM!

there is a place on max henriquez ure?a, between tiradentes and lope de vega.
i think it's called the palm centre.

like curacao, they are supposed to be some kind of 'official' sony dealership.

they seem to specialise more in laptops, palmtops, etc., but i think they have digital cameras too.

they might not have the specific camera you want, but they could probably order it for you.
i know this, because i needed to buy something for my sony laptop. instead of going ahead with the order, i decided to buy it through the internet.
at the end of the day, the total cost, shipping, etc. was about the same as the price they gave me.

you could look in. they might even suggest another place.

If lloking to buy a digital video camera, it is hard to go wrong with sony. How much are you lloking to spend? Is size or lack there of important? What about quality? is this for personal stuff only?

I use 2 sony DV camcorders. One is the VX2000 which is a more "professional" model. Has 3 chips and does a great job.

I also have a little PC-5 which is fine for most any personal stuff and is very compact. This camcorder has been discontinued but replaced with similar newer models etc.

Either way, you are much better off bying in the USor Canada.

We use 3 chips Sony's in our production company. They are the standard.

For something lighter and easily handled you can't beat the new Cannon ZR series. Light, compact, great quality and very durable. We are using those for "IN-Car" Cameras. They have stood up to vibration and impacts that have left similar Sony's and JVC's useless.

BTW use FUJI MiniDV tapes. Best on the Market

I have the 3.3 Sony or 3.2 Sony and it works great. I got sand stuck in the zoom part of the lens but I just worked it out. Thought I was in trouble but Nah, its cool. I have taken some great shots with it although dont try to take a picture of 60 people indoors at night because these ASSES will bust you forever when it doesn't come out like a portrait.

I have taken pic and they are on a website I you can look at but I had to make em under 75k to upload. I can take em in 1.4 meg size and needless to say they come out better.

Look at the pics of the the Condo only in the Album section of the site. I shot those meself and stole the rest.

Tony C, I still like Sony cameras better than Canons. Color satruration is better.

If I needed a Vacation cam, I'd buy this one:

It has a touchscreen LCD for menus, and a digital still camera built in as well. Only one megapixel or so, but a good combo cam. They are very compact and have tons of features. I have an older model, very similar.

If I wanted a cheaper model, I'd probably get this one. Only $595 and they have a link to get a better price etc.

Escott, it is usually better to take the pics in 3 Megapixel format and reduce size and file size later in say Photo Shop. Way more control, and the act of cropping can make up for poorly framed shots and even improve shots that were framed OK.

rafael,

For Quality I agree, Sony can't be beat. But For durability in a small handheld/Palm MiniDV I have to still go with the Cannon ZR series.
We had one mounted in a ALMS Porsche at Sebring and it lasted in there all 12 hours mounted on a rollbar. It even survived 3 shunts over the course of the race. One at over 160MPH! A Sony would have been in pieces by hour #2!

Cool, but I doubt the original poster was mounting on a roll bar at 160 MPH;-) I've had my PC-5 for 3 years now, and it has traveled very well. I've taken it everywhere!

I do. I have 2 128 meg memory sticks so room is not a problem.

Don't try to argue with Tony my friend. You will be as satisfied as sticking your penis in the electric socket for sex. When he pisses you off just tell him you are going to visit Cuba to kiss Fidel!

Sony camera

in fact , I had this camera Sony DCS 72 until last week , some one stole it in my car and I absolutely want to buy the same one again , I have studied all the brands and models , and this one is really the best , holds in one pocket , great resolution , regular AA rechargeable batteries are fine , great capacity , etc etc

zoom 3 X with great resolution and up to 9.6 in VGA resolution , I used it several months , and after that I had DCS 50 , that I gave to my kids

Otherwise , Sony is also the fastest to download on the computer , a few seconds , etc etc , I could tell more .

Thanks Bochinche for the info , I hope they sell this stuff , I looked in the phone boox and Palm centre is not listed , not under this name , I will try to find it tomorrow

Olympus Camera

I've got an Olympus digital camera that I am very happy with. Anybody know where I can get a power pack to hook up to the mains?
