maybe u can look it up and tell us

I suggest you gather all the question you have on Trujillo and then ask them and/or do research and let us know.

It's easier that way. It will aloow us to have a coversation on the issues. If you open 50 threads with different questions about Trujillo, then it willk be difficult to hold an intelligent organized coversations.

Thanks

The Tabacleria Nacional, established in the Trujillo era, still exists but is not very competitive. Its primary brands are Monte Carlo, Cremas, Hilton and others.

Dominican cigars are considered among the best in the world. Notably, they are grown with cuban seed tobacco in soil and in a climate similar to that of Cuba. However, many still insist, whether it be for cache value or otherwise, that Cuban cigars are still superior.

Who Me?

Some Cuban Cigars still maintain their high quality for what they were known for. I wouldn't know personally because I wouldn't smoke one(Fidel you know?).
Politics aside.
Domincan Cigars are some of the best in the world. Dominican Cohibas, Arturo Fuentes are 2 exceptional brands.
Many other brands are made with Dominican Tobacco or with Blends.

medina, i have read at least a dozen books on dominican history and the questions i have asked here could not be answered by the research i've done.

i have never been able to find a photo of johnnie abbes garcia.

i didn't know if the "forum" column was still existing today.

my research on trujillo's dominincan cigarette monopolies didn't yield me any information on brand names.

the members of the forum have been extremely helpful. i hope i have not made a mess of the boards. all the questions i've asked were not answered in any of the material i read.

i have studied domincan history for the last two years, and been a subscriber here on DR 1 in order to learn more about the dominican republic. the people here(on the forum) have a lot of information and personal/family experience that one can not read about in most books.

please be patient with me.

Joel,

it was not meant as a personal attack.

I was just going back and forth with the stuff you asked and thought it would be better to keep it all together with one thread.

I have responded to your other post and as you will notice, it loses it's "flow" and value since we have to keep going back and forth between threads.

I like your questions and at this time cannot provide you with too many answers which is why I would like the questions to stay together.

;)

I am glad you enjoy this board.

La Aurora cigar is something I have read about.

It was named after Trujillo's daughter.

Tabacalera Nacional was privatized six or so years ago and is now owned by Tabacalera S.A. a spanish tobacco company which is one of the biggest in the world. They are currently producing Romeo & Julieta cigars.

Note to Joel

As has been noted by some others, you don't need to open a new thread for each and every question you have about Trujillo. In fact, please don't! Pick one,and that can be your; "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know about Trujillo, But Were AfraidTo Ask" thread.I am sure you have done a complete search of the DR1 archives,Right? No need to "Re-Invent" the wheel here on a daily basis.

A few corrections

1) La Aurora is the cigar division of L. Le?n Jim?nes and is not named after the daughter of Trujillo.
2) La Compa??a An?nima Tabacalera was the national cigarette company taken over byTrujillo. It used to be owned by the Copello family and I believe Alejandro Piola was one of its las presidents under Trujillo.
3) The Tabacalera produced Hollywood, Casino, Montecarlo,Cremas Pectorales, and a few others. Later on they had a deal with RJ Reynolds to produce Winston.
They had the fonest print shop in this region of the country, and it served many diverse sectors.

After mistakenly allowing the Le?n Jim?nes group to associate themselves with Phillip Morris, the "Tabacalera" was doomed, losing market share every year until it was reduced to about 7%, and then only because Le?n Jim?nes did not want a fight with the government. Since Trujillo's death the Tabacalera was a depository for government patronage with over 1300 employees for jobs that could be done by 120....and with an iron-clad union contract around its neck....It even carried a very good school-supposedly for employee's children, byt really also used for patronage and political favors. The current district education supervisor Pedro Diep was once the headmaster there.

When it was "privatized" the bidding was highly suspicious, but in any event, they do NOT make Romeo and Juliet cigars. They did and they do produce the cigar line called La Habanera, which, if truth be told, is the oldest cigar brand produced in the DR, being started one year befor the Le?n Jim?nes peopole started La Aurora.

COTASA-Compa??a de Tabacalera de Santiago-the cigar making division of the old Tabacalera, was the springboard for many many people whou would siphon off orders to the world reknown La Habanera, and make the cigars in outside factories. Factories with huge followings started this was in the 80s and 90s....

Thank you for the information Hillbilly. A few more questions. :)

How many Trujillo era tobacco brands are still being sold today? Do American cigarettes have most of the market because Dominican brands are of poorer taste and quality? Do they not use the same high quality tobacco like they use for cigars?

Questions from a non smoker.

P.S. I s the Trujillo display open at the SD museum?

Is it possible to visit the ruins of Trujillo's palace in San Cristobal? Or is it too far gone ?

You mean Haiti's first astronaut?

In tribute to Jefe, I recently tried Monte Carlo cigarettes for the first time. I'm convinced that the filters are made out of recycled newspaper.

Does anyone know if the Trujillo display in the SD museum is going to be open in November 2004? Is the "assassin car" still on display?

Joel, you might be interested in this. If you are here in November you might even coincide with the filming. Mr Chiri provided the car for the assassination scene.

The real car, as you know, is in the History and Geography museum. I'll try and find out whether the exhibition has reopened.

Joel,
It is amazing that you have "researched" Trujillo and his regime and have yet to come across a picture of his nefarious SIM man.

His photograph appears on several books about the dictator and his regime. I'm pretty sure I've seen the same 1-2 pictures of him on several different books.

I'm away from my books right now but if you PM me to remind me, I'll see what I can do to help you in the next few days.

Tordok, I have read several books on Trujillo over the last three years. My favorite being Robert Crassweller's ,Trujillo:The life and times of a Caribbean dictator. I remember reading Dictator next door, Death of the Goat, and at least two Trujillo financed propaganda biographies. The Galindez book and a few others whose titles escape me.

I have never found a picture of Johnnie Abbes Garcia. I have always figured that being an intelligence operative he would be unlikely to allow many(if any) photos of him to be made public.

Please scan and post a photo of him if you get a chance.

I was reading through the news and came across a story on Mario Vargas Lhosa, the author of Feast of the Goat. He gave a press conference in Santo Domingo(2001) and mentioned that the families of the Trujillo assassins were upset with the portayals of their relatives in the book. He said that he considered Trujillo's killers to be heroes and that he did not intend to harm their familes.

I read the book myself and I'm not really sure what they would find so hurtful.

Does anyone know what Mario Vargas Lhosa wrote that upset the families of the assassins?

Does anyone know what the relatives of Antonio De la Maza are doing today? Is his wife still living?
