I am a law student and I am interested in some information on what the consequences are for people caught selling illegal drugs in this country? Do police enforce capturing those selling or are they payed off? What are the jails like?
Where can I find out more info about this ??
Thanks

I am hoping this is just morbid curiousity but if not, don't do it, sell/use/traffic narcotics in the DR. You won't be getting back to the US for a while. You could possibly sit in a horrible little cell, I have heard that they are very horrible, and not even have a trial for a year or so.

Consequences: dire
Police enforce: Yes
Paid off : NO
Jails: Worse than you can imagine, Midnight Express was Cancun on the beach by comparison
Do NOT try to find out by going there and selling, buying ,smoking, snorting, or any other activity.

Some Americans have paid off the police to get out of jail. But don't for a minute think that it is easy or cheap. At best they will find out what your family is worth then hit them with an amount that will make them cringe. That is after they make you rot for a few months.
With a name like Raquel I am assuming you are female. If Busted you will be sexually assaulted. You will spend time in jail and you are looking at $ amount probobly well beyond your means to get out of jail.
I can drive 100mph down 27 de Febrero drinking from a bottle of rum, drunk off my ass with a 16 year old giving me oral gratification at the time and i will not see a jail. Caught with a gram a coke you will go to jail and you will have no friends in the DR.

To clarify some more I am interested not in what happens to the tourists who engage in this activity but the people who live there, the Dominicans. The reason I am constulting this web site is that I have got some useful information from it in the past. But boy do you people jump to conculsions, sometimes you should not read into these posts so much, take them from what they say!!

If you want a clear answer on a question like this, don't ask it here. There are a lot of yahoos here who have nothing better to do than write exagerations and make personal attacks.

I think these people spend too much time in the sun and their brains have been baked. Or they drink too much. There are a lot of xpats here who are alcoholics.

If you come back in a few days, you might even see people telling you that you are too cheap to hire a lawyer. Just ignore them.

But as for your questions, selling drugs is taken very seriously. The police will in fact arrest you. But you will see very few if any people on the street selling drugs. It is not like in the US where people will ask you if you want drugs as you walk down the street. I have never actually even seen drugs here. Not even weed. Now, I am sure some lamer will jump in now and say I do not go out much. He will say this because he thinks he is so smart and informed. But compared to almost all developed countries, DR has very little drugs.

This reply, Raquel, didn't distinguish betwen locals and tourists;

Police enforce: Yes
Paid off : NO

How hard is that for a student like you to understand?? As to PepeDr, he is pissed off at the board as to his not getting a group response sanctioning taking porno pics of local girlies and selling those pics on the WWW to gringos. So take a grain of salt, or 2.

Raquel, as always, if you're looking for information whether it be for a research paper or for some real-life answers it is always important to consider the source of the information in order to be able to judge whether it has any value or not.

Just click on the search button below any poster's comments and you will get a complete listing of all of their previous posts. As to PepeDR's comments, well, you can read all of his past posts here and you will see what ricktoronto is talking about. Some people just get upset when the answers they receive aren't what they're wanting to hear, and then become irrational and irate and blame the messengers. We see it here all the time. He is not unique.

Drug use and possesion is a very serious matter here, and it's about the only thing that someone could not bribe their way out of in the D.R. without considerable trouble. Just about everything else is 'negotiable'. This is not.

Dear Doctor Pepe, I'm getting p!$$ed off at you. 12 posts and 11 sour ones... Give us a sweet one so now and again, just so we don't think you're a bitter old coot...

Raquel, what specifically is the topic of your essay for school? I think if you need specific sentences for specific offenses, we probably cannot help you here. We can help you in terms of what we've seen and what we have experienced. But specific letter of the law legal information, I don't think so. Fabio posted a while ago with specific sentences for drunk driving - and he may decide to answer this, given a very specific question. So, clarify your question and quite possibly someone will know what the story is.

I hear this alot but it doesn't add up

I don't doubt what you guys are saying and have said in the past, but I have been here for four years now, and have come accross many, many locals who are habitual drug users, and are not even a little bit scared of jail time because they know the right people.

I'm not talking about big political bosses, just a liutenant here or there. And at our free zone company we do test for drugs and get alot of applicants we have to decline because they test positive. So why aren't they in jail already?

How come the people they buy from aren't in jail?

How come the Spanish and Italian expats are always getting high on the weekends? Why aren't they rotting in jail?

Is this line I hear repeated on DR1 every week or so just the official line on drugs? Or is this really the case?

I've heard a horror story or two, but just as there are murderers and rapists walking the streets in the DR who will never see jail time, there are drug users too.

Where I live, there is fairly open drug use when the parties start up in the evening. And even I know who the pushers are on the beach. Not the main guys, but the little guys... (well, I certainly hope that I don't know the main guys). So, I think maybe this is an issue not talked about, but the actual use has increased over the years, both among tourists and locals.
