Hello, DR transplants and beach lovers!

This Christmas we are renting a house on the beach front on Cabarete Beach, located on the main costal highway (Rt 5) east of Puerto Plata. Wanted to hear your comments if this area got any earthquake damage, and any general feedback about the safety of this area (coming with 2 small kids), cleanliness of the beach, safety of the surf, how busy the traffic is on Rt 5, etc. Whta kind of experience can we expect, since we will be newcomers to DR. Here is the house web link:

You should have a very enjoyable vacation. Cabarete is a very pleasant town with friendly people. Tourism is laid back here. Highway (2 lane) is fairly busy since it is only road, but not excessively so. Many regular posters live in Cabarete, and many of the rest of us live in nearby Sosua.

Slight damage to a building here and there, but nothing serious. You'll have a great time. The Cabarete 'beach-lovers' will be friendly and accommodating to the kids and it is a laid-back place. The road is busy and I would hold the little ones' hands for sure. Many other kids on the beach - a great place for a laid-back family beach vacation.
