DR vacation areas

My girlfriend wants to take a vacation to DR, and we're trying to figure out which area is the best for us (Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, La Romana). Both of us enjoy the beach, pool, food, etc of resorts, but also enjoy getting into town for some culture and sightseeing. Do any of the above areas have interesting towns nearby and still have nice beaches?

Hi there,

My favourite palces to vacation in DR is Sosua and Cabarete on the North coast.
Sosua is morelay back filled with ex-pats, that made it their home and Cabarete has a much younger crowd of party folksand surfers.
Both have wonderful beaches.
