Guys,

Per AZB's recommendation in another thread, I went to Ahi Bar to try their steak. It was fantastic; the best steak I've had in the DR!

Therefore, I'm very interested to hear of other recommendations for places to eat in Santiago.

Where do you recommend? What was good?

Let me tell you where one can eat a good lunch, very cheap in santiago.

If you are in Downtown santiago try the freshly cooked meal in "el Encanto" (2nd floor). The food actually has flavor and you get a choice of rice (white or flavored) a choice of meat (Beef, chicken, pork, pork chops, even sea food) and a choice of salad (3 different salads) all for about 50 pesos.

Supermercado Salvador has the exact same setup and the food is delicious (bartalome Colon Av).
Both places above are clean with Full A/C.

If you are Criss colon (500lbs) then I suggest eating at "Mr. Cook". They have a delicious lunch buffet which includes a delicious soup, a variety of salad and delicious rice, meat variety and italian pasta. All for 120 pesos and you can eat untill you can have yourself carried to your car by the wait staff. All you can eat.
This place is located right near Plaza Internacional.

If you are at the monument you can eat in a corner restaurant (francia with Calle del sol) called "Mana". They have delicious food plates for under 50 pesos. Open air, no a/c.

Don't eat in Supermarket Nacional and Super Pola. They have a cheap Plate of the day (worthless) but if you would like to eat their other dishes be prepared to pay by the pound. They weigh every tiny little piece of meat and tomatoe. I once bought lunch there and it cost me 100 pesos (in the old days when peso had some value). These places are all rip offs.

About Ahi-bar:

Order the Ahi-Bar fillet mignon (comes with creamy mushroom sauce) or simply order charrasco Ahi-Bar (its a delicious tender strip of steak). Both dishes are around 195 pesos each and comes with a choice of french Fries, mashed potatoes, tostones and steamed veggies. I like to eat it with mashed Potatoes.

Thanks for these suggestions, I'll check them out.

I'm also more interested in places which are more of the caliber of Ahi-bar (ie not RD$50 peso plates). Any other thoughts on places/dishes of that level?

What is the address of the A-hi Bar?

I've searched and can't find it. Is it open in the day? Thanks in advance!

50 peso plates are only lunch deals, of course no one eats fillet mignon for lunch everyday.
Nano's (villa olga) has a great churrasco (something like a steak). They also have very delicious Mofongo.
There is a italian restaurant behind Supermercado Nacional called "prestigio" (not sure of the name). They serve very delicious italian pasta plates for very reasonable prices. It seems more like a house than a restaurant. I am not a big italian food fan but I liked the food (just don't eat the lazagna, it wasn't delicious).

A great gourment sandwich would be at Palermo bar in los jardines (formerly known as Piper's bar). Order the Palermo special and you will be hooked for life. You can take a date there and impress her with this handsome sandwich. The music is also very romantic and the place is very secluded. Chances are, your other girlfriend or your wife will not find you there.

Wednesday night is Karaioki (how do you spell the damn thing anyway) at Mr. Cook restaurant with delicious authentic tasting mexican food buffet. Lots of pretty girls come to sing as you bite away on spicy tacos and chicken wings etc.

Thrusday is Italian night at Grand Almirante hotel and casino. All you can eat gourment Salad and a huge plate of pasta of your choice. The chef makes it right there to your liking. Its a lot of food so eat a light lunch and eat to your hearts content at the buffet. Costs 150 pesos / person without drinks.

El cafe had a deal where on thrusdays you buy the drinks and they serve you a free dinner plate (selected item). It was a good deal but now I am told the restaurant is closed down for good.

In front of Plaza Internacional there is a BBQ place called "parillita" (again not sure of spelling). they have delicious BBQ chicken breast with yuca and onions and also a great Beef Churrasco. Very reasonably priced.

If there are 3-4 of you (2 guys and 2 skinny girls) then "Marchena" is a great late night joint. After dancing you can order a "carrito de marchena". This is a sandwich special which comes on a tray full of french fries with a ton of minced meat, becons and melted cheese. Then you have around 10 plus pieces of cut up sandwiches (chicken, and sliced meat, cheese etc) all around the border of the tray. This food is enough for 4 people. Costs 200 pesos. bargain for quality sandwiches and FF with meat and cheese. Girls love to dig into that stuff and everyone can eat away what others don't eat.

Kiteman, not every thing is found on the net.

Kiteman, AHI-bar is in the monumento area. Everyone knows that place so get yourself near the monumento and ask anyone to guide you towards Ahi-bar. Its an open air bar with a ton of people inside. They have a very secured parking lot with several attendents and security staff that look like FBI (dressed in black suits and microphones for radio communication). Its not an expensive place and the steaks are delicious. Order either fillet mignon with mushroom sauce or ahi-bar Churrasco (its like along strip steak).
Enjoy.
