Greetings ALL..
I currently run the highly successful website, www.00fun.com and I have an interesting question for all of you here. How well do internet businesses do in the DR? Do any of you know anyone that is currently doing business on the web? I have conducted several market research surveys and was shocked to find out how many people own computers and are on the world wide web..but the amount of websites in the DR is weak. Does anyone have any thoughts??

Nycewon, I currently operate the first and only Parfums online store on the Dominican Rep., and I can tell you that it hasn`t been succesful at all. We are located at www.enel.net , one of the biggest portal of the Dominican Rep.

Anyway, I would say that they are some succesfull sites here like www.uepa.com .

That's not good. Why do you think you haven't been successful?

I here UEPA is well backed, that's why it's still around.
I have heard indifferent reports on how successful they are.

If you don't know it doesn't matter. I guess you don't live in the DR.

Moving on...

Most of the web based businesses I see fail here are usually way over the top usability wise and have no idea how to market their product. Usually a bunch of collage kids given the task to build, market and develop a site.

They often look to mainstream media to promote their online product. That's fine if you have very deep pockets, but many don't...

Robert, I don`t know why our e-store has been a total failure, because we did invest money on ads online. We even sent one e-mail to every enel. user with a special offer. However, maybe we need to invest more, but I don`t think we will, not at this moment as I think it wouldn`t be profitable.

Regarding UEPA, I don`t know if they are profitable or not, but they do seem profitable. Their main owners are as Robert said, Fernando Queipo, and Axel Hache. Apart from their site, they publish a little monthly magazine with ads of new products, places, and of parties. They also design websites like www.Marcaspremium.com , www.praia.com.do , and www.coldwellbanker.com.do .

If you want to read more of them, visit:

The curse of most Dominican websites: they need super-duper-ultra-enormously-fast connections. I guess the sites are designed to work on the designer's computers. I have DSL and most of these sites take ages to load.

When will they learn that our DSL service is slow, let alone the dial-up service here. I hate Flash animations, at the beginning it was clever and cute (if you had great connection), now is tacky and inconsiderate.

I don't think there is a successful e-commerce venue in the DR that is targeting the Dominican market. Most surfers here are kids, with no money and no credit cards. IMHO that is.
