Budget accomodations, Hotel Palacio, Sofitel Frances, Hostel Nader? Any other suggestions. Is the Zona Colonial within walking distance to the nightlife on the Malecon? I've got one night in SD and we want to do it up pretty good. Thanks.

Budget accomodations? Those sound pretty pricey to me. When I go to SD I pay RD$400-450/night, including taxes. That is my idea of budget accomodations.

Ken, could you offer some of those recommendations to me? I'm going with my girlfriend, so I doubt she would like the low, low end places, but we don't need anything more than a hot shower and clean linens. I think Palacio was about $60 a night for the "traveller's studio". I didn't think that was too bad for the Zona Colonial, but maybe it is. Thanks.

beano, this subject comes up often. Here is link to archives. Go through the threads and see what interests you. Keep in mind that prices might be a little higher than indicated here because of the fall of the peso. http://www.dr1.com/forums/search.ph...d=262638&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

If you are on vacation and making this a special trip, $60 for the Colonial Zone would probably be more appreciated by your girl friend than one of the truly budget hotels.

Hey Beano, I was wondering about that too. I did a search before but most of that info was old. Like the last time I was there I stayed at the Hotel Caribe in ZC which is really nice and it was $65 a night I checked for this year and it's now $130 a night...

Hotel Mercure would probley be your best bet... $69 a night, There's another one called Conde de Penalba or something like that and that one is around $50-60 but I'm not sure how nice it is.

The one's you mentioned are pretty pricey like $130-150 a night. Try the Mercure if you want to stay in the colonial zone. There's also a bunch of Hostels. I don't like those but you may they cost like $15-20 a night.

Here are some links:

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I think I will probably go with the Hotel Palacio. I had a reply from them quoting $60 for the studio. That sounds fine to me, and it looks like the location will be great for walking, dining, etc. But, is it too far to walk to the Malecon? thanks
