Education level of dominicans

This is for some of the newer members to DR1.

I'm more recently working closely with several dominicans. Mostly they have been doing secretarial type stuff for me. A couple of them are women you'd probably consider very attractive. This is here in Santiago.

I have been astonished at the lack of education they demonstrate. Some examples:

- don't know how to use the phone book
- are unable to plan things more than 2 steps long
- cannot write in spanish
- do not know how to use a computer/the internet
- don't like to strain themselves in terms of thinking
- can't organize themselves at all - everything ends up written down on thousands of scraps of paper

I'd say the level of functionality I'm seeing for some people here 20-23 years old is that of a 10-12 year old in Australia.

I want to stress that this is not the upper class type of person, but nor are they poor. I would say they're middle class in this country.

As they say, love conquers all. But buyer beware - if you bring someone of this level or below back to the US, it may take a lot of effort to integrate them.

As a rule of thumb my family does not hire dominican women to work in our offices unless they come highly recommended.

Reason:
Women flirt with all the men in the office,
Are not courteous to their bosses' wives on the telephone
Do not volunteer information to the wives when they're asking about their husband's whereabouts, i.e., mtgs, etc. thereby creating problems for the men by making it seem like they are hiding something,
and most importantly, are lacking in office skills and technology.

This coming from a Tasmanian???

I reckon you should get your other head to post messages
in the future :)

Ignorance comes in all shapes and sizes and is available at very low wage rates around the world.

My partner (Dolores) would be considered middle class.
She can write in Spanish and when I last looked, knew how to use as phone book.

Pib would be considered middle class.
She knows how to use a computer.
Not so sure about straining herself when she thinks.

Many so called "middle class" kids/students I have met here do ok in my opinion.

What do they say? You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.
PS: Send all hate mail to my PM. You know who you are :)

On a side note...

The Australian education system is by far the best I have seen on my travels around this planet. You are comparing them to a very high standard in my opinion.

Dominican office staff

adrianb,

What is the formal educational level of your staff?
Have any of them had any business/secretarial school training or experience prior to being hired?

Are there any good schools close by from which you can recruit?

Inability to write in Spanish should be a major concern.

Regards,

Randy

I disagree.

I have 800, employees.
And I have lots, of managers.

Most of my managers, have some common traits.

All speak & write 2 or more languages.
All have a technical degree.
All are VERY WELL ORGINIZED, to the point that I?m jealous.
All have excellent attendance record's, usually are working 10 hour days.

They are all extremely professional, dedicated, hard working, talented people.

The one thing I find lacking, is actual hands-on technical capabilities. Everybody is a specialist in one field. And once they have that Degree, it is very tough to get them working with their hands & brains again, verses their brains & mouth.

But I remind my-self, were am I going to get some-one who is experienced, all they way around in their particular field???

I'm not, you have to groom them on your own.

Ask for a spread sheet or a MS power point presentation, they will blow you away. Ask, do you think that operator needs a power tool or a fixture too do the job, more efficiently?????
" Let me do an analysis, and I'll get back to you with my findings"

Were doing electronics, RF, IR, Microwave, frequency?s, along with PC Boards, that have components placed on them, faster than you can blink you eye.

Where can I get experienced, technical people like that??????
I can't, I have to groom them, and our ex-employees usually get hired away by new Foreign start-up companies.

Anyway

Give a man a Fish, Feed him for Today.
Teach a Man to Fish, Feed him for a Life Time.

Thanks

Are you hiring?

Tim,

Are you hiring? Sounds very interesting....

I'm a software engineer with a BSCE degree working for Motorola in Ft. Lauderdale. If you are looking for people, send me an email. All of our jobs are going to India and Malaysia.

Randy

Thanks for the replies. (except for that bratty english guy). :)

My original intent was, to demonstrate that a lot of the attractive women here - that many guys want to have as girlfriends and/or marry - are often not as sophisticated as they may appear. On just talking with some of these girls, you would be very impressed. But working with them is another matter entirely.

As for payment - I pay pretty well. I prefer to pay a bit better (which in USD is not much more) and have them more enthusiastic to work. It helps.

As for finding more qualified people - I am in the process of this, I have 3 candidates who are medical students at PUCMM, which is the top university in Santiago. One of them will work with me part time.

Adrian,

"On a technical note, I have not at all been impressed by the level of computer/database/programming skills I have encountered here." That does not surprise me given that database programming is a specialty that most computer science graduates only take one class in. Plus, very few CS people are really interested in doing it - it certainly doesn't interest me. So given the population of the DR, wouldn't expect to find many.

You are right about the girls. These guys who think they can fly to a country they don't know, meet a girl and plan to marry her after two weeks of intense "dating" are really taking a big chance.

Regards,

Randy

Hummm, I see no sankies, putas, no one chasing love or sex in this thread so I'm sending it to Tim since he's the man that knows about employees.

Happy landing. ;)

Now I?m confused!!!!

AdrianB

I thought when you mentioned ???
A couple of them are women you'd probably consider very attractive.

You were pointing out that some of your employees were of the fairer sex.

When you say??..

I did not realize, what the topic of the post was really about.

I?ll have to bow out, although I do have attractive women managers, they hold their own against their counterparts.

Thanks

adrianb, I know exactly what you mean. Just last night...as I waited for my Double Whopper with cheese....I couldn't ---for the life of me!!-- get the older lady behind the counter to help me figure out if Brownian motion really does explain short term stock market behaviour.

:)

A 1994 University of Chicago survey found that 54% of men think about having sex at least once a day.

I have the same question
AND WHAT ABOUT THIS SHIPPING COMPANIES/COURRIER EMPLOYEES. i'm about to hang them by their privates!
As a former employee of a shipping company I can answer that question: We spend 50% of our time trying to figure out question no. 1 and 50% trying to figure out how to do things done in spite of the above. And the remaing 65% we spend trying to figure out how not to get hung by our privates by angry customers that can't figure out question no. 1 themselves.

And Scott, I think mondongo's post was very funny. YMMV. :)

When I married my wife,she was a poor,uneducated woman,from Simon Bolovar!

Now she is a wealthy, uneducated woman, from Arroyo Hondo!

So what is your point?

Does an education make a woman a better wife!

Promote a long and happy marriage??

I doubt that!

How about mutual understanding, and lots & lots of intimacy?? I say "YES"to the latter, and "No" to the former!!!

You are right about one thing.Taking a poor uneducated Dominican woman away from her support system usually spells disaster!

I agree with adrian and also with CC. I am always amazed to see some really intellectual foreigners who can talk stock market lingo and work numbers which are beyond my head and talk like MIT scientists but when I see their wives, I see nothing more than a Campesina or worse, a poor chopa from a barrio. I just can't understand what the hell do they have in common with each other? The wife usually stays quiet like a mute and sticks to her husband or simply stays busy taking care of the baby. I would never have guessed in 100 yrs that an educated man would actually end up spending his life with a woman whom he has nothing in common with(education, class or even style).
So what is it that keeps them bonded to each other? I give up. Is it sex? But but, it its only about sex then he can certainly do far better than what he got. Its very rare to meet a foreigner (male or female) who have actually found an educated, classy woman from a decent family (meaning: living in a concrete house with a car and a visa to usa).
