In the DR1 news today

Fernando Morillo, of the National Unity Council said

".....the President still has a chance to "put the country back on track" by introducing policies to reduce inflation and fuel prices, raise salaries and impose taxes on the rich."

I still can't believe that there are still people with that Liberal Hippie mentality in which they actually believe that price controls and taxes can bring prosperity!

Tony,

It's the mindset of the 60's and blinder-vision.

I'm surprised that they haven't seen the hanwriting on the wall since the collapse of the Soviet economy. However, Socialist have been rattling those same old sabers for close to two hundred years now and still don't have the right group of solutions. They live in a dream world.

I think the economic implosion that is about to come to the Dominican Republic will be so dramatic, that 80s-style shock-therapy will be the only solution to the crises. The unproductive sector of the economy is sapping all the economic juice, and the idea that higher taxes on the rich will take care of the problem is just the recycling of failed economic policies of the past. I think the government knows this, but is trying to find a way to keep things going until after the election. It will be interesting to see where the PRD finds the money it traditionally doles out during presidential campaigns.
