Not true. Its unlikely it would happen to you here but DR does respect international copyright violation. For a few personall use MP3's then it would not be worth the time or money to bring a case against you.

Start downloading movies like the lastest unreleased Harry Potter movie, then fill your house with DVD burners and colour laser printers to make authentic looking sleeves and sell them by the hundreds or thousands and wait and see what happens!! There have already been many cases of people being busted for doing music CD's here in DR.

Or set yourself up as a super node P2P hub and serve out a few gigs of MP3's a day and I think that will be enough for them to catch a flight down to pay you a visit.

The internet will be dramatically changing laws. There will definitely be several changes within the next 10 years. But for now, as long as you are downloading mp3's for your personal use, you will not have a problem.

A good question though is traveling through customs with a laptop with lets say 1000 MP3's. Would customs have the duty to fine you or confiscate your laptop or will they just ignore it?
