If it is so hard to depend on any kind of infrastucture then would it be better to liveo ut in the boonies on a few acres with your own self contained homestead?

I am not sure I would say better, but I see no reason why a person couldn't "homestead" here. I am not saying he could survive on what he made though. Most of us would probably need some additional income.
