Check out this thread from last year. The peso prices will have gone up but the US$ equivalent should remain constant.

I also stayed at the Aladino in October and found it OK for the price. Limited english speaking staff but managed. Not many parking spots but security will double park you if they know when you are leaving.

I think I paid less than $ 40 but was off season. I was told you could get a better rate for weekly stays.

Personally I love

Aparta Hotel Drake in agustin Lara. You can walk to a supermarket close by, and there is a little bodega next door oh and a food place and the corner of the street down one block. You don't have to go far to buy things you need. ;)

I used to stay at Casona Dorada a lot. They are between 35-50 per night. The rooms can be inconsitent, so ask to see a few and pick one. They have a restaurant, small pool and a disco/bar.

They are right on avenida independencia in gazcue, so you can walk to the zona colinial as well as to the big casinos such as the Juragua etc.

It is also a short walk to the Malecon. Location wise in that price range, I always stayed there.

You may want to call to a travel agency in the DR directly because if you make the reservation from here they usually have higher rates for international customers that the rates that they give to dominicans and to tour operators.
If you want I can give you some phone numbers of travel agencies that work as tour operators on the Dominican Republic (Santiago Area) or even a toll free number for one in Mass. that works directly with them.
Just let me know if you are interested.
Hope it helps,
Virginia
