The conditions in the flooded areas are truly appalling. People are without homes and without food. There are people that are managing to hand out the basic necessities - mainly some of the bigger farms in the area. Anything for children, especially babies, will be received with thanks. Matresses, blankets, food of any kind and clothing will be welcome -- Basic medicines for fever or diarrhea would be helpful.

Any donations in the North Coast area could be handed to me. We travel to the area every week and will in turn hand over to the management of the farms to distribute to the local barrios. These farms are sending out trucks on a daily basis to hand out fruit. Even something as basic as fresh drinking water...

If you could contribute, please send me an e-mail or pm on this forum.

What areas are the most affected? It would be nice to have people drive there and see things first hand. Might "Open up" some pocket books.

Eddy, the areas that the farms are supporting, are on the road to Monte Cristi. From around Palo Verde, all the small towns around the Yaque river to Monte Cristi, Manzanillo (Pepillo Salcedo).

If one of the moderators would be kind enough, I can send some pictures to post on the board. Let me know.

crazydominican1, from where do you want to send funds or goods? If it is from the US, you can send direct to Paso Robles via DHL or Fedex. I can e-mail the address to you. This is however expensive. Let me know where from. If you are in the DR, the farm can send a driver to collect. For funds, also let me know where you want to send it from, and we can direct it appropriately.

Here is an update on the situation. Last weekend a major distribution to 800 homeless families was done by the farms (in the rain). This included matresses, lots of medicine, fruit, canned food, beans, mosquito nets etc., There are two containers of emergency goods that came in from Miami ready for distribution for this weekend. They had help from a Doctor from Guayubin/Casta?uelas who dispensed emergency medical care and medications.

To my knowledge, there is no accurate count at this stage of how many people/families are still homeless. The rain stopped on Sunday night/Monday morning. Today, there is a little sun, but the clouds are building up again.

Any help that anyone can offer, is welcome. May I mention at this stage that this effort of assistance comes from fruit exporters in the area. The responsible people are collecting from their customers, and from anybody they know, in the US, Europe and England. As far as I am aware, there are no formal assistance programs (e.g. the Red Cross) in effect at the moment. I know of one church group who distributed food over the weekend. I mention again that this information is what I know - there may be other assistance programs that I am not aware of.

I am in the US Pacific NW. Can you post address on forum for sending stuff. If I send funds in what form is best and make out to whom? and will it go to the same address?

Chris,
your initiative sounds excellent. If there is anything that can be done from here in SD please let me know.

I know there is an Intermon (Oxfam Spain) team - which includes some British staff - setting up an emergency programme in Montecristi, with European Union funds. I could find out their exact location if you are interested in linking up with them.

Edited to add this link which is a listing of all agencies active in response to this emergency:

E-Mail them to me Chris. I can post them as permanently downloadable attachments to this thread (recommended as they will always be there), or drop them on my web server and post them as immediately viewable (but potentially ephemeral) gifs. Let me know which.

Thanks XR, I will bring hundreds of photots home tomorrow - there are simply too many to e-mail and I don?t have ftp capability where I am at the moment.

I will post the correct address from the US tomorrow. A Miami freight consolidator accepts donations, consolidates and ships on to the DR. I?m confirming my data and will post the correct data tomorrow.

For anyone who would like to send something along to assist the homeless families, you can send it to:

Anchor Marine Agency
100 West Middle Road
Riviera Beach, FL 33404
Office (561) 882-3366
FAX (561) 882-3399

The goods will be consolidated there, and sent along by boat to the Dominican Republic. These goods are distributed directly to the people who need it.
Please mark your parcel clearly "Relief Effort - Rainbow Farms"

Thank-you in advance for any contributions.

Chris, the reason for my Q. was over the hollidays I might be taking some people (vacationers at Condos) for a all day tour. I might pick that destination. Hopefully following this, some $$ will be donated.

Chris

Yeah Chris how about an update. Let us know if conditions have improved for some of those who were hurt by the floods.
