I'm travelling to Santiago in April for a week with my 14 year old daughter, and we are interested in staying in a safe, clean and inexpensive hotel, or boarding house. Luxury is not important, but sanitary conditions and security are, plus being somewhat convenient to walking around downtown. I've read on earlier posts that the Ahola del Sol is supposed to be nice, and I got a message that the Hotel Matun or Hotel Colonial would work well. Any thoughts on these three hotels, or other suggestions. Thanks. TJVR

We stay at Hotel Colonial when in Santiago. If you go there, request the new section. Same facilities, but rooms are newer. The telephone: 247-3122

I can second what Ken said

I have recently placed a lot of folks there and they have only told me good things.

If you call, ask for Ramona.

Aloha Sol is also very nice, but more than double the price of Colonial.

I stayed at Hotel centro Plaza, hotel colonial, hotel dorado and Helios Cabana. A friend who was travelling with me stayed at Hotel Aloha sol.

Hotel centro plaza is furnished better than the hotel colonial, but inside of the room is very basic.
There is a minibar with prices 3-4 times the supermarket.
What I like in staying there was that I could have made direct calls from the room without going thru the hotel operator. But ofcourse the phone bill would be much more than using a codotel phone card. But I don't think you can use the phone card from their hotel system.
This hotel also have a bar/disco in the downstairs. I think its was around $50bucks or something close to that.

The Hotel colonial is not that much different in structure from the centro plaza. (colonial have less staff member and not dressed as nice as the ones over at centro plaza). Also there is not a minibar in the room, but there is a refriderator (make your own bar) and a telephone that can use the codetel card (cheaper calls). This hotel also seem to have a backup generator which is a plus consider that its only cost like around 13bucks.
The location is at salvador cucurullo and a block away from calle del marzo(busy street)
Hotel dorado is suck. Its from 5-under10 bucks. It is just across the street from Hotel colonial. They don't have back up power, refrigerators in the room or telephone. Its more like the local hotel. A great hideout.
Downside about the hotel dorado and colonial is that you have to knock on the door late at night to get in. Centro plaza is open 24 hours if I recall correctly.

I like the helios cabana suites. It is very relaxing, and relatively large. This property appeals more to overnighter as oppose to long stay. I like it way much over the centro plaza. Its does have a great amount of privacy attached to it.

Aloha sol - eat over at the restuarant but haven't seen the room.
My friend that stayed there didn't like it that much. He mention there is great service, but the rooms wasn't that much of a catch.
He will stay at the Hotel colonial on his next visit. First timers alway spend way more money that when you those who visited before and figure out how to cut back and take advantage of the cost for similar services and standards.

In puerta plata I had way more for my buck in accomodation at the Puerta plata beach resort and casino. It was only $20. Big room with living dining and kitchen. Very nice bathroom and very cold a/c when it the weather is hot.
So if you're venturing out of Santiago into PP that place may be worth it. Ofcourse when you're in sosua you can alway stay at rocky because he is a member of this forum and you will find his knowledge and guidance very healthy and resourceful. The room are very basic but the ambiance is great.
