motoconcho conversian kits

Does anyone know where I can get a conversion kit to make a motorconcho into a trike. I will be using mountain bike for most of my transportation in the DR when I get there but I figure a MotorConcho set up as a trike with a substantial cargo basket would keep me from needing a car for 95% of my needs and then those rare times I need a car I can get a rental or hire one. If no one knows where down there I was thinking of building the kit myself up here and bringing it down when I come down.
By the way I just got back from the DR the day after Christmas and I checked in at work and the Navy gave me my walking papers. I am official retired May 31 2005. Life is good.

another question

does anyone know what models of bikes are used for motoconchos. I have seen mainly suzuki 100s and yamaha 100s with 2 cycle engines. Have I missed any others?

No I meant 2005. In the Navy you put in for transfer to the fleet reserve up to 18 months before your eligibility date. Basically as of today I have 520 days left.
I wanted to get my confirmed date. Once you get it the Chain of command quits with the attempts at subtle blackmail. "Oh PO Sizemore being the Urinalysis coordinator would be career enhancing." Now career enhancement is my preparations for getting out.
By the way even if I can?t find a conversion kit in the DR I am thinking maybe there is one mail order. The motoconchos should be a pretty standard bike worldwide. I am looking online now and I hope to find something.

These kits would be brill for living in dr as I understand cars and petrol are expensive there. We're moving out 14 Jan. Mind you here in UK petrol is now $6.20 per gallon. YUK. Barby

easy fix

I was thinking a person could make the front end of a motor cycle like one of those bycycle ice cream vendors. That woud let you have the grocery capicity. Just a thought

he BEST conversion kit for a motoconcho that I can think of (having lived here for 11 years) would be a JCB or CAT running over the thing!!!!!

I don't mean to belittle your question John & I can quite see your desire to make such a conversion - I just have a HATE against motoconchos because of the lack of consideration they have for car drivers AND themselves!! Few (if any) have real lights, most have no front lights & they weave in front of cars & chase across crossroads without any thought for other traffic or traffic lights.

Petrol is now 60 (plus - not sure exactly as it changes each week!!) peso for an American Gallon which is just under a IMPERIAL gallon. NOT expensive against British prices but a little more than USA prices I gather!

There are several mechanics who will do the conversion you are looking for & a couple of these 'Motorised Trikes' running around Puerto Plata whom one could stop to enquire as to where they got their trikes from (or converted). Let me know if you want me to make further enquiries after your reseaches on Internet & I will get on to it!! - Grahame.

no rush

I understand the hate for them. What I am looking at is literally a way to avoid having to get a car and also avoiding the balancing act of trying to carry groceries and forth on a scooter.
Seriously a 125Yamaha trike with a large cargo basket would do about everything someone living in Sosua would really need. I would not want to take trips on the damned thing but to go the grocery store or deliver pizzas hell it work just fine. As far as myself needing it now I still have 17 months to go. So to look further for me is not needed but if you put up the info here I am sure it would help others.
Hell I might even get Mike Cook to put me on a fiberglass shell so I am dry during the rainstorms.

1. Get a car. It would be much safer and attract less attention.
2. If you are set on a bike, why not mount a ball hitch on the carrier rack and pull a trailer much like they use for taxis in Samana? Even here in SD although seldom, you will occasionally see a motorcycle trailer. If you are handy, you can make it yourself. If you only need a bike, just unhitch and go.
3. Be sure to post a picture of the finished product for us.

Ih while I agree a car would be better for manythings I will be limiting my stuff to sosua. If I go out of Sosua I wil be either going by autobus or renting a car.
I will be having a mountain bike for most things I do. It is just if I am goign to go grocery shopping or going for bulky stuff the trike would be better.
I comutted fivemiles to work for over a year in virginia beach for over a year undoing all the debts my ex wife caused. I know I can Handle Sosua since I will be just chilling out for the first year or so. I just dont want to lug a case of El Presadentes in a back pack on my mountain bike.
As far as drawing attention I am six foot five blonde hair blue eyes with big ears I am already screwed in that category. As far as your trailor sugesttion you may be right on the money there. I could get the parts at www.northerntools.com and bring them down with me.
Does the DR have licensing requirments for trailors? Also I know the motorcycles used are 2cycle engines but do they take the baffels out of the Mufflers or something there is no way they should be that loud?

motoconchos in Samana

Here is a picture of motoconchos in Samana, the trailer could carry 3 adults, I could not belive my eyes when I saw one of this contraptions with 8 kids in uniform coming back from school.

I suppose UK petrol/gasoline is measured in so-called imperial gallons, which are a tad bigger than US gallons? But still.

the trailor in samana

Are there anyplaces that sell them in the DR or did some one make that. If I needed to I could bring the axels and suspension in my luggage.
