Is there any reason to believe/hope that this could mean cheaper flights from the UK (and elsewhere in Europe) to SDQ via Miami than when buying the flights separately from BA and AA respectively? In my situation that would be very welcome.

Check out YOURSELF if this makes any difference. I am sure you can fly BA to MIA non-stop (in fact you can fly AA from LHR to MIA nonstop) and connect to the AA flights now and the price may be the same so check all possible options. (Try Expedia for example).

E.g. - BA codeshare all the way, BA to MIA then AA, and AA all the way, as it is the only way you'll know.
