Help: Bavaro to Los Haitises

I have a friend staying in Bavaro and I want to take him to Los Haitises, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to do this. Has anybody done this before?

I'm thinking about driving to Sabana De La Mar and catching a boat from there, but I don't know how long this would take us.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly, Bavaro to Sabana de La Mar is about a 3-4 hr. trip through Higuey, El Seibo, and Hato Mayor. When you are entering Sabana de La Mar there is a road to the left that leads to a place I'm am told is Cayo Hondo. It is where the boats and guides are found. You supposedly cannot enter the parque nacional without a guide. Also, I was advised that advance reservations (with whom I do not know) are a must.

A side note: the scenery from Hato Mayor to Sabana del Mar is super. You will pass a date palm plantation. It is a surreal vista.

When I encounter more definite information on Los Haitises, I will advise.
