Two days ago my husband's nephew was almost kidnapped from inside the family store in near the Charles de Guelle Mega Centro. His grandmother had a hold of him and was fighting off the kidnappers. This happened around noon. While one guy was trying to grab the kid another was waiting outside on a motoconcho.

Later that afternoon there was a news story about children being kidnapped and their organs taken out and then left for dead. Listin Diario today also ran a story titled: Un rumor sobre robo de ni?os alarma padres en Boca Chica.

We think because where the nephew lives his uncle has a BMW jeepta and therefore perhaps the motive was money, but after reading the Listin article it leads me to believe that there are just some really SICK people out there....

I had heard of this happening about 15 yrs ago in the DR and understood that as a result, they are much more vigilant at the airports about children leaving with people other than their parents.

You said it, it's sick city. How dreadful for your husband's nephew - thank God he's alright!

We were travelling to Germany with a 5 year old boy last year, whose dominican parents were not present at the customs at POP, only the grandmother. Apparently there was one important paper from some immigration office in Santiago missing.
The discussion with the officials took about half an hour, and finally they agreed, that they were no longer suspecting a case of child smuggling if the grandmother paid RD$850.
She could only come up with RD$800 which was also accepted and the boy was on his way.
So much to "more vigilant". :)

Well, then, imagine what it must have been like 15 yrs ago...probably much more slack.

Anyway, I read the report and it sounds like a big rumour / panic. But it has happened in the past and is chilling thought.

Well the family believes that somehow neighbours are involved or someone from that area, because they believe the motivation behind it is money. The store was in a different location and was robbed a couple months ago, so they moved to a safer place closer to home. Desperate times are calling for desperate measures.

With the mass pardons of hardened criminals going on right now it is in everyone's best interest to be much more careful than usual. There is no job market for the people being released from prison, and even the few who may have been innocent certainly learned a thing or two in jail and will have plenty of motivation to try their new skills.

Unfortunately, there are alot of sick people in this modern world of ours. Even countries as the Dominican Republic with it's overabundance of good people have it's share of "sin berquenzas". Just last week a 12 year old girl was kidnapped in Florida, U.S.A. and was found dead in the backyard of a church in Sarasota, Florida. The scary thing is that the kidnapping had been caught on tape and the entire country say it in their Televisions. The girl was simply approached by a guy, the guy told her something and off they went. Before the entire country knew it, the girl was killed and dumped on religious properties. Sick people in deed.

This idiotic panic seems to arise every few years in the DR. Thanks to it, and the people who promote these rumors, two austrians were almost lynched yesterday near Boca Chica.
