It has just been announced that Aristide and his cronies have left Haiti for Dominican Republic. The United States, who backed his installation to power withdrew their support yesterday and called him to step down. Aristide is seeking asylum.

Wud, don't you know which Island you are on?

This guy will get asylum, a bunch of million he stole and will be waiting in exile and he will be held in high asteem in the DR for his raping of the country.
Hippo will be giving him classes on how to steal more if he ever gets back in power after telling him what a cheap skate piker he was for not taking enough.

Oh Oh Poppy

I wonder how much $ the US is going to slide Hippo to grease the rails for
Aristide to retire in the DR? Maybe he can assist in Hippos relection bid....

In a report (39 minutes ago), it said that he had flew to the DR but that was not his final destination, Morocco, Taiwan and Panama are all stating that he has not contacted them nor will they harbour him, so I don't think anyone at this time knows where he is going. It did not mention in any reports that the US marines helped him flee,(Ladybird - where did you hear that?) it did however say that the Canadian military was on the tarmack while his jet left, but they state that no one knows where he is heading after the DR.
What happens next is anyones' guess. It does sound like the US is happy about his successor stepping up to the plate as he has a reputation as a fair and uncorrupt individual.
There are also reports that he signed a letter of resignation, but those reports cannot be verified at this time.
I am wondering if he even left the country and that maybe it is just a ruse, since no one actually saw him get on the plane and no country is admitting to letting him seek asylum? Makes you wonder!

Asylum for JBA

I for one think that the US should grant asylum to JBA.
It was them after all who fell for his overly pious behaviour.
His bank accounts, however, should be confiscated and used to aid the country which he robbed.

It was announced on CNN (or at least their scroll bar at the bottom of the screen) that the U.S. Marines escorted him to the airport. The latest news has his plane refueling in Antigua with South Africa as a possible destination. Morroco (according to CNN) put a statement out stating they will not take him.

Makes Sense

Back to Africa?!
Makes good sense. I hope that SA will only be a stepping stone.
There are many more destinations with corrupt friends abound. How about Zimbabwe?

From what I've read South Africa is his final destination. SA has always been a major supporter of Aristide...so it just makes sense. Besides if I was him that is where I would probably go...it is far enough from Haiti that he will be forgotten by his opponents and he can enjoy his fortune without much worry. If he stays in The DR, US or France he will always be somewhat involved with Haiti. He will never, ever be president of Haiti again, so why even bother...
THe big question is what happens now. I foresee a nasty struggle for power from all these groups (the "rebels"), whose only thing in common is that they wanted Aristide gone. These "rebels" aren't nice people (Death squad leader, cannibal gang, etc) and they aren't exactly fighting for democracy or for a better Haiti. Even if a decent gorvernment takes charge in Haiti they will have to give some power to these people to appease them.

Thank you Marlie for putting the brakes on the 'myth & rumour' floating around!! Making snap decisions & quoting as 'Fact' something that is reported on CNN, CDN, or even BBC/ITV, without waiting to see how the 'DUST' is settling, is not a good idea as it only helps to mislay the truth somewhere IN that dust!!

My understanding is that NO-ONE other than Aristide & his closest friends & associates, plus maybe the "to-be" recieving country Heads of State (if one has yet been chosen & agreed) know where the man is. Later today & possibly tomorrow, the facts might be more clear!!

Do you think he might pursuade the JCE to let him onto the DR elections in May?? Has he enough money to buy that?? - Grahame.

I told CNN ten years ago that the US would not have the

guts to really solve Haiti's problems. They are going to spend (or have already spent) 350 billion dollars in Iraq, a place where they are not wanted nor appreciated and where they will ultimately fail miserably as soon as the Shiites take control of the government.

They could make Haiti into a paradise with just 1% of that money.

A huge new school system, a huge adult education program, a monster new health system and a humongeous reforestation program to start. A new Police force, discipline like never before, no Army, exile the mfers forever or "disappear them" . ( And they could use some of the 3,000,000 Americans that Bush has put out of work to help out in Haiti...)

Do not think that the US will even try to take Aristide's money. They let the general go in '94 with just 74 million dollars in foreign accounts!!

HB sad for Haiti...

Hatian Policy

US Policy on Hati. America has always failed to be an army of Occupation. Even in Italy we let the Mob take over so as to not be in charge. The backing of Aristide years ago was a boat people problem not a sympathy for the Hatians problem. To truly get control and help the sociaty as a hole we have to very strict on the society we are controlling and changing. Remember the problems in Hati, Iraq, DR and otherplaces is not as much what the governemnet does but rather what the population lets the government do. It took an entire genration of US dicated schooling and policing along with several hundren thousand US troops in country to get Japan and Germany set up.
Would the average Hatian or Dominican truly want the US rebuilding the sociaety at the cultural level? Would the chopos accept Vehicle inspections? What about enforcement of driving laws? When the US actaull decides to rebuild a country they do it be breakign the culture down for a genration and rebuilding it in the way it wants to.
Hati and the DR are small blips on the Radar Screen to the US government and the American People. the American government will suport who ever will keep the boats out of the Water. Remeber with the Cibans they are not welcomed with open arms. If they are caught at sea it is strait to Gitmo.

a poet might have written

So farewell then,
Jean B Aristide,
Charismatic priest.
Some might say in hindsight:
"Never trust a religious leader
especially one with a big ego".

Money spent in Iraq

On the issue of $350 billion spent to reconstruct iraq.

Do you actually believe the US will spend all that money and not get something back in return? Besides the oil, I'm sure they will get at discounted prices for years to come, more then making up what it cost, the main reason they are in Iraq is LOCATION..LOCATION...LOCATION.

The most important thing to remember when being in business.

What are they selling? Democracy

Who they selling it to? IRAN...Syria...Jordan....whether they like it or not.

Now I ask you...What does Haiti have to offer?

Car?

It looks almost certain according to this morning's news reports that JBA landed in the Central Africa Republic. This also is a former French colony and got its independence around 1960 if I remember my African history correctly. The CAR is just south of the Congo and despite being lush and green when you first look at it, I think it would be hard to find a more desolate place in terms of human rights, in the world.

I still cannot figure out if Aristide just could not do anything for Haiti, as a result of the state of the country when he took leadership, or if he really is a bad fellow?
