Tourism - Your the boss!
Tourism Agenda
First order of business:
Have a Tourism Summit meeting where everyone involved in the industry here would be represented.
Basic subject would be to draft a 10 year gameplan for tourism in general with clear direction and a series of checks and balances in place for periodical control of the plan in order.
Identify what needs to change and what needs to be done, niche areas that should be invested in and a consensus on all issues should be reached by democratic methods.

1.Fix the freakin roads from Puerto Plata to Cabarete. This careless disregard for the basic infrastructure is like telling tourists to stay the hell out of the country.
2.Have the police arrest anyone that comes to the beach on weekends and leaves their garbage all over the beach. (read Dominicans)
3.Have the exhaust emissions and mufflers checked on Moto~Conchos. If they put out pure white or black SMOKE or have mufflers that are too loud confiscate the vehicle.
4.Arrest Dominicans that park their cars in the middle of the road with careless disregard.
5.Blow up one side of the street in Cabarete to widen the road.
6.Arrest every vehicle with a amplifier and speakers and microphone.
7.I can go on but...

They should have garbage police and put the convicts(prd) to work cleaning up the side of the roads and the rivers.

I think some your points are more about you personal gripes than actually constructive ways to "really" improve tourism in the DR.
Of course they are important, but isn't tourism a much bigger picture?
I'm a firm believer of "Market Power" or "Market Correction". The fact that if points are argued openly and a concensus is reached it means these points are for the benifit of the majority, This tends to help "self govern" a specific area of business "over regulation" as well as "non-regulation" are equally bad. The market tends to go in the right direction if let be with basic guidelines of course.
Case in point: Look at the pressure the Bayahibe association of hotels is putting on the goverment to avoid the sale of land in the parque national del este.

Hasn't the land already been sold? I think it's just about allowing Globalia consortium to develop the land. I'm sure the senate have been brought off and will pass the change in the law to allow this to happen. Very sad!

Yes it looks as though the land from the parque national del este was sold a few years ago but it seems the pressure at least has brought the subject to the news, which is a step in the right direction. Same thing with Bahia de las Aguilas, land was sold years ago but still no construction.
I think the first step would be to actually debate all subjects on tourism freely and make certian pledges such as respecting national park land and make an effort to stigmatize anyone who violates the agreed points of the plan.
A 10 year plan could include lobby efforts for public spending on specific projects.. Example would be to work out a budget for the 10 year period and have all parties use this new lobby power to make sure allowences for said public projects are included in the national budget.
This money would include a budget for a promotional campaign in the media.. TV comercials on CNN, inviting travel magazines for fam trips, etc.
Plans would also include budget allowences for road repair highway construction and clean-up efforts et etc etc.

Ok, here is how I would fix it.
Lower the departure tax on tourism to 10 dollars.
Lower the airport Taxes that we pay on each ticket.
Take the sosua, cabarete ugly hookers and send them to concentration camps in haiti. Bring more amelia vega type hookers from santiago and moca to attract the tourists with good taste in women.
Make sankies wear a T-shirt that says "I am a lier".
Fix the roads and remove the aggresive venders from the beach.
Close down High caribbean disco, better yet, blow it up with a bomb with all the ugly hookers inside.
finally, deport Escott from sosua so he won't be able to spoil the fun for the rest of us.

Actually Robert, maybe you should think before you snap so quickly at people. There are a lot of negatives that keep tourists from visiting the DR. Some of these same things also attract some people. The sex industry DOES attract quite a lot of people.
I stand by my last post. Eliminating the gigilos would cause a drop off in the female tourists from a certain part of the world. Excuse me for inserting humor into the post. Didn't know it was that time of the month.

The "forums" could be done over a period of time where the common joe would be able to go as a non-speaking participant in the audience and dates could be assigned to certian subject matters. "round table" members would be limited of course but representatives of certain areas or business areas could sign-up on a limited basis..For example Bayahibe would have the association president a few of it's hotel owners or managers would be "active" speakers for the summit..same structure could be applied to Sosua or cabarete Boca Chica or the Diving industry of the casino industry etc.
Advertising is very important without it we can forget about our dependency on the AI's.
Niche areas such as Golf, Scuba Diving, Wind Surfing, S.D. Colonial Zone would be identified and "mini" conventions could take place to see what is available as well as what solutions the world market could offer us..these people would mingle, ideas will spawn as well as deals made..investments made, $$ attracted anything to do with these areas could be covered at the convention. Lawyers and goverment official present to answer questions from potential and present investors etc etc.

I might add that they should actually advocate the easy availability of UBH's, both male and female, here on the North Coast but will refrain for fear of bringing AZB even deeper into the discussion and risk his performing some secret chiropratic move on me while I least suspect it.

Although it pains me to say this, I agree 100% with Scott. These are not unreasonable things to take care of in a tourist area, and the cost-benefit ratio would be high. Who checks the smoke? Since when do Dominican Police (PN, AMET, POLITUR, et al) care about right vs. wrong. It's their opinion, and bribe (or lack of one) that counts.Escott said:
