question about cellphones from U.S.

Can a cellphone bought in the U.S. be brought to the DR and activated there or is there a certain type(s)/brand(s) that must be used to do so?

codetel/verizon digital has to be 'cdma'.
orange digital is 'gsm'.

verizon says that soon you will be able to use any cellular here, but i don't know when exactly.
