We were planning to take a day in mid-April, while staying in Santiago, and travel to the La Isabela historical site on the north coast. Is it worth the trip ??? what should we be aware of ?? and is there anything else along the way that we should see ??? Thanks.

There was a small fee to enter. It had some nice areas, and a museum that showed how the area probably looked originally. There are some shops there where we bought some statues made with polished wood (very old tribal-type) and there were some paintings too. There is a re-built church in the general area, that is also very beautiful. The only problem, we were told that Trujillo had ordered the area bull-dozed, so it's not an archaeological dig. But interesting, nonetheless.
If you're going that way, from Puerto Plata, check out the fort, and the cable car. They're pretty cool too.

It's been many years since we were there.......

however "hombre mapa" showed us the cliff that Trujillio had the vestiges of the village bull-dozed over. At the time there was a "dig" in progress and we were able to see the foundations of some of the houses that once existed there as well as the "remains" of several individuals believed to be Spaniards.
We enjoyed our visit 14 yrs ago and would certainly go back.
The church was being built at the time for the celebration of a mass by the Pope during the 500yr. celebrations in 1992.
