I was at Bahia Principe from March 6-14. This was my first time to Bahia Principe, but third time to the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and this is an awesome resort.

Hotel Grounds: It is not a big high rise hotel and instead is spread out amongst several three or two story villas. The grounds are gorgeous and full of flowers, palms and beautiful hedges. The rooms were very spacious for two people and each had its own patio or deck, which was nice to sit out on in the evenings. There is a mini fridge in your room that is stocked daily with water, pop and beer. what more could you ask for? As for the bugs, yes you do see some bugs crawling around outside, but hello this is a tropical country, what do you expect? Do they bother you? No. Also, there is an endless supply of beach chairs and towels so you never have to worry about waking up early to reserve a chair.

Staff and Entertainment: This hotel is staffed with some of the most amazing entertainers (Antonio, Roberto-all smiles for those boys) who are they to make your trip enjoyable. It is important to remember that this is a big hotel, so no, they are not going to come find you every second of the day and invite you personally to come play a game, but if you want to do something, look at the board, find out when it is, and show up. And, if you are a sidelines person like me, there is nothing wrong at sitting back and watching your fellow vacationers make fools of themselves. At night the street that leads into the hotel turns into a street party so the crowd moves out there. This is great if your are the type that wants to go to bed early and don't want to hear the loud music or if you are someone like me and want to party until the sun comes up. On this street there is a casino, disco, karaoke bar. Trust me there is always something to do.

Food: Make sure you eat at the a la carte restaurants. They were all really good and a nice change from the always enjoyable buffet. The key is to book your a la cartes the moment you arrive.

Outside the Resort: If you are looking for things to do outside the resort, go to Campo tours. It is located at the end of the beach by where the little market is, and they can hook you up with amazing deals for tours which are cheaper than the hotels. We went on the jeep tour which is worth doing if you have never been to the DR and want to experience life outside the resort. Make sure you get Gabrielle as you tour guide, tons of fun. The hotel also offers a bus that will take you into cabarete or sosua. We took advantage of that and went for a day in Sosua.

any questions???? Hope this helps. The Dominican Republic is a great place to vacation, young or old. It is so much fun that I am going back at the end of May. Staying in Sosua this time and I hope it is just as nice as Bahia Principe.

Bahia Principe

Hi all, Dave here from Ontario, Canada.

Really looking forward to our trip to DR on October 1st. My wife and I will be staying at the Bahia Principe close to Rio San Juan. A friend of mine has stayed at this resort several times and highly recommends it. As this is our first trip to DR his recommendation sounds like a good bet to me. Besides, reading over many of the trip reports, it appears as though there are many more positive aspects to this resort then not. One area that concerns me a bit is the reference to sand flies or was that fleas ? I suppose a can of fly repellent is in order, or is that just dumb.

The resort appears to have a lot of activities. Throw in a couple of excursions and then a trip to Sosua, Cabarete and or Puerto Plata and well, before you know it our very short one week trip will be over. So now the difficult part? the plan! Which excursions, which bars/clubs/restaurants outside the AI, which shops (souvenirs and stuff), what days will we be relaxing on the beach and swimming in the pool. Although I?m definitely the type of person that likes to plan things out, I?m a little loose in terms of executing the plan. That?s alright though, from everything I?ve read so far on DR1, an excellent source of information btw, I?m sure my wife and I are going to have a blast, plan or no plan. Thanks to all those that contribute to this site, I feel as though I?m already in the DR.

i just got back from the bahia principe.
I got a mini bus to cabarette and it was 400 pesos return. About ?10 in UK terms.
I think they need 6 people to fill it, but the day we went out there were only 4 of us so we had to sort it out with the driver, but he seemed ok with the set price each.

Nice place to relax

That's where I usually take the kids when I just want some time off. Very friendly people and lots of things to do.

I think we've had about five class trips to bahia so far and my students love it as well.

A couple of things to watch out for:

The third pool a a bit deep for young children so if traveling with kids, steer them away from the last pool.

Stay away from the beach after nighfall because there are some nasty little critters that will leave you scratching all night.

about the busses, if you are up to it, you can catch local buses that run the route every half hour. Could get crouded at certain times, but you will definetly meet real Dominicans..lol

Last, but not least, ENJOY!

yep

Caribbean Village is also nearby and it was pretty nice the last time I went. Unfortunately, that was over a year ago so I don't know if it's still ok.

I'll ask around.

Hi all, I have stayed at the Bahia Principe 4 times and also once at the Caribbean Village Playa Grande which is about 15 minutes from Bahia once. The Playa Grande is much more smaller and quieter than Bahia but the beach at Bahia is not the greatest, to be honest its no different then the lakes here in Southern Ontario, Canada, but Playa Grande's beach is one of the nicest that I have seen in the world and I have seen many. Bahia itself is a great hotel, worth every penny and more the staff are wonderful and so is everything else. The drawbacks are the sandlfeas and normal repellant does not work against those little bugs, the tricky part is that they are soo minute that you cannot even see them but they bite and there are alot of them. I always come home covered in bites head to toe, and I have been their at different times of the year and it seems that they are always around, their are however people that never get bit by them. Another bad thing about Bahia is that it is in the middle of pretty much no where. Cabarete which is full of bars and clubs is about a 45 minute drive, and the town of rio san juan doesn't have much to offer, puerto plata is about 1 hour to and hour and a half away depending on how fast you drive. But, there is a great deal of natural beauty around the hotel. Try these beaches, Playa Grande, Playa Caleton, Playa Diamante, there is a natural spring water lake in the mountains just past the town of Cabrera called blue lake (its gorgeous) and if your up for it about a 2 hour drive south east is the Samana Peninsula which is absolutely beautiful, especially Cayo Levantado which is just off the coast of semana a beautiful little island. In Puerto Plata there are some fun clubs those in the Playa Dorada Complex, Mangu, Hemingways, and there is a fun place in downtown Puerto Plata called La Barrica (or something close to that). My advice is get out and see the northern coast, Bahia is great itself but outside of the AI is the real Dominican which is absolutely amazing. Be cautious but dont be scared just be friendly and adventurous and you will have an amazing time. I can answer any questions, if any one has any. As for my self I am trying the southern coast this time I am off to the Coral Costa Caribe and Santo Domingo in December and I hope I like it even half as much as I love the north.
