Hello all, I am new here. I just moved to santo domingo from the usa. I really enjoy the weather, people, and culture. Ques; I live with mi amigo, and he says I really need to be careful where I go and what I do, because I am a gringo (white man) and I can get robbed or stabbed just because I;m white, and they think I have money? Well.. I love to walk to the stores, gym, resturants, etc... and I get plenty of looks, but...everyone so far is nice and friendly. ( I always make a point NOT to carry much money on me) Your thoughts please? -John

It's Like Art and Pornography

Dangerous areas are hard to describe but you will know them when you see them, like in any major city. In well travelled areas, the malecon, El Conde, malls and the colonial zone, Gazcue area, etc., it's as safe as any other city - in the poor barrios you may be right - you could get robbed - and if you can't tell that you are in a dodgy location you may not be living in a suitable city.

Similiar thoughts

I feel almost ridiculously protected by my Dominican friends. Suffocated doesn?t seem to be too dramatic a word. I?m not stupid about where I go and what I do and I imagine you should?nt be here either. Still I?m wondering if long time expats here have a feeling for how well Dominicans calculate the danger to foreign friends-family etc. Any thoughts or experiences on if they are overprotective or have a tendency toward that would be appreciated. My Dominican friends seem to feel that the economy for people is definately worse and they feel that people are more desperate and more likely to act out on it.......
Thanks

I also have young adult children who will visit so I want to be sure. Thanks...rick and dan for the input........john
