I am a student that will be working as an intern in Santo Domingo. I am having trouble finding resources to rent a studio/room/etc. in Santo Domingo at less than hotel rates...I know they are out there - where? How? Thanks!

For a minute there I thought your handle was SmallBrain...lol

Anyhow, I suggest you wait till you're in The DR to rent. That way you can find something in an area that you like, maybe not too far form where you'll be interning at...
Once down there, the papers have tons of ads for apartments, studios, rooms, etc...

It may help if you tell us where exactly in Santo Domingo you will be working at and what your interests are. Santo Domingo is a large city with many different types of neighborhoods (from very poor to very rich, from quiet to noisy, etc)

US Dept. of Commerce

I will be working in the US Dept. of Commerce near the US Embassy (not sure where that is...). I am not sure what is reasonable to pay for a place that is safe, convenient, etc...I (being a student) of course want to pay as little as possible for these things - but am willing to pay if I have to, to get into a safe area - does this help?

The Embassy MAY be able to help you.

Get a copy of "LISTIN DIARIO",or"HOY" . They have a "Rooms To Rent" section. Most of the rooms are in private houses. Most are in the area you will want to be near.I bet you can find a room for $100 US a month, and a really NICE ROOM for $200 US a month. The people will love to rent to you. Good Luck!

Gazcue!

The US Embassy is located in Gazcue, therefore that would be the best neighborhood to look at, and a very safe location too. In that area you will find everything you need at walking distance! So?.you can even start to look before you come down, just look at the classified section (clasificados) online for these local newspaper:

Listin Diario: http://www.listindiario.com.do/clas...?xd=703&Nam=Oferta Alquiler&NamP=Apartamentos

Periodico Hoy: http://www.hoy.com.do
http://www.super-casas.com/(lacspg55ujorwfyfcyt0yj45)/reg/do/properties.aspx?object_type=123

El Caribe:
http://www.elcaribecdn.com.do/listado_clasificados.aspx?Categoria=300

Have fun!

Juanita, those apts. for rent in Sto. Domingo are

extremelly expensive. All prices are quoted in US$ and they range from $1,000 to $4,000. Is rent in Sto. Domingo that high?

They can be, depending on the area and what you're looking for. For a studio type and because he's foreign expect to pay around 400 US in an area like Gazcue. Like Crisco said you may be able to find a plain room (not a studio) for around 200 USD/month.

JuanCarlos,

Yes it is really expensive but that?s because of the nice neighborhood and because of our dear clown Hipolito, now most apartments are paid in US$! It also depends how you plan to travel around the city, if you don?t mind having to take public transportation than you can look in ?cheaper neighborhoods? or another option, depending on how long you are here for, would be to rent a room in a family home. For example, I?m on the opposite side of the city and paying ?a big? $7000 pesos (around 145 US$) a month for a 2 bedroom?with a huge garden, ok the neighborhood is not as ?glamorous? as Gazcue but it?s safe! And BTW there are 2 empty apartments (8000 and 7000 pesos)! :nervous:

Where are these apartments for about 7000 pesos? I am looking for something like that in a middle class- like neighborhood where I could walk to get the groceries, etc. Thanks.

There should be people at the embassy that can help you

And there might be staffers that are leaving for vacations that need house/apartment sitter...

Get here, feel your way around and then get a place.

Hi, are you still looking for an apt near by the Embassy?

Call 809-682-4119 ask for Ana Fondeur, tell the person in spanish that you are interesting or wants to see the apt that is in front of the US Embassy.
