You would expect from a name like Politur (Policia de Turismo) that some of them at least speak another language. You guessed, no they speak neither German, French nor English. Ideally before they are selected for Politur they should have passed an exam of any other language, but that is not the case.

If you live in Sosua or the surrounding area you are bound to have encountered a few of them during the course of the day. Maybe you should stop them (you will find them to be extremely polite and clean) whenever you can and give them a language book. Well you may not carry a language book with you always, but how about talking to them in your language and even better try to teach them a sentence in your language, it will be fun.

Failing that, you can look for their Captain, he is not hard to get hold of, residents of Sosua will vouch for that because as a friend of ours commented "he is everywhere from 7am 'till the late hours of the evening". His name is Captain Manzueta, with his mass of over 300lbs in his white Terrios, he is easily noticed.

Our Captain Manzueta is a big character, always ready to help, the face of Sosua has been given a makeover since he arrived on the job a year and 3 months ago. It should be a new challenge for him to get his team to speak a new language, so just give them a hand and give them some language books.

One Job

Politur has one job, which is to hassle street girls and occasionally intervene when a bar is too noisy etc., they will sometimes take the music away (OK, two jobs) . They do NOTHING to help tourists, speak only Spanish, get paid peanuts and are only sometimes armed and judging by the myriad of weaponry, with guns they buy themselves.

And this is your experience all over the DR?

Whats up with guy...

After reading some of his other posts....this guy, Ricktoronto,is apparently posing as a Canadian......anyone know which planet he is from??
Most likely, the politur flunkies get sent to Boca Chica.....I was there last week and couldnt wait to get out...what a poor excuse for a tourist town...no wonder politur has only 2 jobs there(according to him)....its predominately sleazy hookers and sleazy bars....but apparently thats its claim to fame........the big shots in Politur have bigger fish to fry.....

A few months ago I observed 2 Politur officers in the middle of Puerto Plata, near the Post Office. They were "apprehending" a boy of about 7 years. He put up a really good fight (obviously was totally terrified from the look on his face) but they were able to bundle him into the back of their car. I did not see the "incident" he was accused of, but stopped to enquire as it looked like child cruelty. Nearby shop owners said the child had been trying to steal from some tourists. The Politur actions looked way over the top, but if the child was terrified enough not to do it again, I suppose there may have been some justification. One got the distinct impression that his "resistance" meant he knew what was coming, & had therefore done it before!

I am curious about how long you have been in the Sosua area and why your first post is about how wonderful Politur is.
Would you care to elaborate?
