Where is the Aloha del Sol hotel located in Santiago? downtown? I will be renting a car but have heard horror stories regarding the traffic jams in most dominican big cities like Santiago. I hope Aloha Del Sol is not in the "centro". If it is, what are other good options?

I personally would't recommend Aloha. Stayed there 2 months ago and the 2 rooms we had were pretty musty and humid with no windows. Try Hotel Platino. It's located on Estrella Sadhala in Plaza Platino in front of PUCMM university and it's very quiet (located behind the plaza). It opened only a few months ago and the rates are comparable to Aloha. The only problem is that the restaurant isn't completely finished yet but they can give you what you want if you order it ahead of time. Since it's not downtown, there's less traffic but you can still get where you want to go easily.

Here's the phone number in case you want to call: 721-7576 email hotelplatino@verizon.net.do

I've stayed at Hotel Aloha Sol 3x this year. Never had a bad experience, except for a safety box that didn't work. Really was a non-issue. Felt completely safe there the entire time. The rooms (standard) that I've stayed in cooled down quickly from the frigid A/C each room has. Each room has cable TV with English-language programs as well. Rooms are thoroughly cleaned. Staff is very helpful, some speak English. (One bell-boy walked me down to the casa de cambio, negotiated a better than listed exchange rate, and escorted me back. I gave him 100 pesos for his troubles, he took care of me the rest of my stay.) Full service bar/restaurant below, very reasonably priced. Breakfast included in your room rate. Convenient location to much of the city.

Regarding traffic, I've never seen it very busy in front of the hotel. Calle de Sol can be busy, especially around the intersection which has McDonalds, but most cabs use the parallel streets to clear the traffic and then come down to Calle de Sol to arrive in front of the hotel. I usually walk the area during the day to frequent the local businesses for shopping deals. Traffic depends on your circumstance and needs within the city.

Hope this helps as well.

aloha sol new renovation

My brother has informed me that they did so remodeling to the lobby and made it bigger. Also, they added a small bar which my brother says is the perfect atmosphere if you just want to hang with a friend and have a couple of drinks.

It is a nice place

And lots of my friends and visitors have stayed there w/o complaints.

Nowadays i like to use Hotel Colonial because it is such a value: $12-15 a night with a/c and a minibar and TV...Right in the middle and very quiet.

I have not really checked out Platino, so I'll have to take Badpiece's word for that.

None of these places is far from anything.
