Hello!

We've been in Santo Domingo for about a month. We've been trying to find a house care-taker who can help us around the house through friends here, but so far haven't been able to find anyone.

We're looking for a lady who can cook, take care of the house - washing, shopping, cleaning, ironing, etc. Most importantly, she has to be safe and reliable to take care of our three-year son - so we need a very trustworthy person.

Ideally, it would be great if she spoke English, at least a bit. We're willing to pay a good salary, but we don't know where to look for a reliable person, especially after hearing stories of robberies and even kidnappings. :bandit:

We would be very grateful is someone can recommend a reliable, reputable agency, or even perhaps a candidate to help here. :)

Hi, I might have someone for you. My cleaning lady is fabulous, she' s an older lady and has been cleaning the apartments in our building for over 40 years! She is very trustworthy. I've asked her on a number of occasions to recommend someone for a friend etc...who was looking for a cleaning lady and she only recommends people whom she knows are very reliable, trustworthy like herself. I will ask her tomorrow morning when she comes to clean if she knows of anyone. Can't promise that the lady will speak some english though, that' s hard to find. If you wanted french-speaking that would be easier with all the Haitian ladies available for domestic work. I assume you will want her to live with you in the maid's room?

Hi,

No, we are not looking for a live-in nanny, just someone who can work from 9:00-19:00, 6 days a week max., but usually, less then that. We are willing to pay for transportation to come to our house, and extra fees for additional hours.

Thanks very much for your response, looking forward to additional information tomorrow.

I have one, I over pay her, at RD $7,000/month (in Santiago). She works Mon-Sat, 9am - 6pm. She also works public holidays. She always arrives around 8:45, and often leaves at 7pm. I often give her time off when I am not here.

She is extremely motivated to do a good job for me. She cooks, cleans, irons, washes clothes, answers my phone, answers the door and basically takes care of everything in my apartment - and I mean just about everything.

At first, I tried to find people through references. But that is too slow. The best way is to advertise in the newspaper. Run an ad in the main SD newspaper, for Wed-Saturday. Make it clear what you are looking for. Cull people on the phone, then interview the best 3-4 candidates. Bring the best one in on trial for a few weeks. Let her go if she doesn't work, and then try the next one.

Theft? Keep an eye on them, then eventually trust them. Make sure they value the relationship with you. If they know they will make good money every month, they will not steal. However if you are firing them, then escort them to the door and make sure they have nothing. No "you're out of a job next week". If you fire them, tell them, and then have them leave immediately.

I have found great people this way.
