Hey there Judy...in Texas!
The Outback Safari is a great day trip...but the best ones are just getting out into the DR villages...and seeing the country first hand...ask for a local taxi to take you on a tour of the area...there are always good gentlemen who work for/at the resorts...just ask reception.
As far as the children of the DR...school supplies are one of the best items you could bring for them, as it is also in need.
