I have a co-worker who keeps constantly talking about boca chica and how cheap things are and how there's girls all over the place who love americans and blah blah blah. So I decided to setup a trip to go to boca chica and have already made travel arrangements. :bandit:

I really dont know what to expect, and was wondering if anybody had any advice on where to go whilst there.

My coworker painted this crazy picture of the place where after you get to the hotel you go to a massage parlor to really unwind (I guess to get rid of the jetlag? I've never been to one before). Then after that you can buy like 50 cuban cigars for $20 and sit on the beach all day and have a good lobster dinner for like $5 and drink el presidente beers for only $1 each.

Also, I've been told not to waste my money by going to a resort and was recommended a place by the name of costa lunga?

I called the hotel place to make reservations and spoke to some guy but it sounds kinda iffy. The guy was just like 'okay what's your name and when are you going to be here? To which I replied with my name and the dates and he was just like 'okay on such and such date you will be here'. I think I should call back just to confirm the reservation.... :cross-eye

I've been told by other dominicans that parts of D.R. are very shady and to look out for 'bandidos' and that there are people waiting to scam you at the airport and such which leaves me kind of worried about going. Although I look more like a club bouncer than a person who is worried. :lick:

I found a site online where you can have a taxi waiting for you at the airport in santo domingo by reserving it online and paying via paypal. I'm debating as to whether to do this or just catch a cab at the airport. Anybody have suggestions?

Costalunga is fine...and mario the owner is really cool. I do prefer staying at el candil right around the corner from costalunga (as the owner there will pick you up in person at the airport....when i stayed at costalunga they sent a taxi to pick me up). ANd i think the security is a bit better at candil...but for real...i really like costalunga too.

I think what you encountered on the phone is the more "layed back" attitude there.

To set your mind at ease....why not email mario at costalunga and ask for an email confirmation and ask if he will arrange for transportation to and from the airport.

Go...relax....and read the sankie subsection on here and you will have a grasp of what to expect as far as your chica chasing expectations.

First off the "girls who love Americans" are PROSTITUTES. **Not*** girls that love anyone (in fact particularly Americans, some of them are quite ignorant with the girls, of note from the NYC area, and coppers) . You are coming down to pay money to professional sex workers to have sex with you. Do not think different, and do not "fall in love". (Or send money to "her" after you leave)

Massage parlors are ripoff joints for gringos much like yourself, with no experience and weak or no Spanish skills. Avoid them , period. They are designed to deal with "too much money in the wallet lag". And they are not the cleanest, coolest, nicest joints either.

Costalunga makes reservations just like you said - you can call back and ask again, or better yet have someone fluent in Spanish call to confirm - or call in the afternoon during the week and ask Miguel who sort of has 1/2 way OK English, to confirm.

But if you expect an English speaking front desk girl and a computer generated reservation number, etc., wrong country. You wil note they didn't take your credit card # either. Keep your passport ( carry a copy of the ID page) and all valuables and gold and such in the safe in your room - you pay $20 for the key- you get that back when you go - the keys are quite expensive.

Anyone who prepays via Paypal for a taxi at an airport with 1000 taxis is nuts, so don't be nuts. Don't pay more than US$18 to the Costalunga and maybe US$1 to the guy who will try to steer you to a cab. Take ONLY a van or car with a Taxi Turistico logo on the door - the rest are beater sh*tboxes that are not worth sitting in , not for that price. ASK Them BEFORE getting in if they know Boca Chica AND the Costalunga, and agree on (tell them ) the price - US$18. There is no need to tip - you are going 10 Km and getting clipped for the distance.

Bring US$ and not Pounds Stg. as I am betting "whilst" you are at home, home is the UK.

There are NO Cuban cigars for $20, maybe $20 each - not a box - 100% of ALL cigars sold on the beach are fake and crappy. All of them, regardless of how well they are packaged. Dominican cigars from a decent store are fine and better quality than Cuban ( especially fake Cubans) . There are NO lobster dinners for $5. There are $1 beers though, even less than $1 actually.

jcarn, are you from the UK??

Mate, a massage parlour 9 times out of 10 means 'you know what' in any country you go to! Also decent cigars are always gonna cost a little. "You get what you pay for....." blah blah.

Where on Earth culd you pay ?3 for a lobster dollar. Fair do's it is cheaper in a lot of respects, but you almost sound like your taking the p*ss - please dont take the wrong way!

Anyway it will be my first time to DR next week and cant wait, although not gonna for cheap beer and hoes! lol

Hope you have a good time mate.

pound sterling? My home is outside nyc. Why does everybody assume i'm british? Although I guess I could be considered a gringo by some since I was born in the us but my parents are hispanic... just not dominican. Then again I hear you're considered gringo in most hispanic countries even if you are hispanic from just based on how you dress and act and speak. I've never been to my home country because it's too complicated to go there with castro being insane and everything. My bad for being naive, This will be my first vacation solo, i'm only 22 yrs old :alien:

As far as money goes, I'm only bringing a few hundred dollars I have saved up. I was told things wouldnt be terribly expensive there or at least cheap compared to nyc. I'll die if I go to a club and wind up having to pay $8 for a corona like in nyc

Anyways I spoke to miguel in spanish when I first called, I'm guess being from around nyc I'm not used to everything being all laid back.

Anybody recommend any places to go in boca chica or restaurants to eat? I've been told cosmos is good.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm gonna try my luck with some of the tourist girls and some of the local girls too. If the local girls turn out the be hoes oh well... It's not like anybody back home will know :knockedou

As far as spanish skills, I can speak spanish okay but sometimes I forget words. I think primarily in english but can speak spanish somewhat fluently it's just sometimes I wind up speaking spanglish like my parents do. You know stuff like instead of saying escuela segundaria you'd say el hi eskool, etc.

btw, the name jcarn is just an online psudeonym i use that I got from a video game

yo no soy muy descarado pero si la situacion se presenta :cheeky:

restaurants

Cosmos is the disco in Boca Chica..you'll find plenty of chicas and drinks, but no food.

Italy Italy is good, Muchachas (which is right next to the disco) is good as well. The Boathouse is nice, and across the street, more or less, from Italy Italy and on the beach. On the beach, there is Da Nancy, and one other Italian owned place a hundred yards or so down the beach, name of which I can't remember. If you like great fish, you will probably enjoy any/all of these. Prices are very reasonable too. You can also get pizzas at many, and they tend to be specialty pizzas , and pretty darn good too, if you don't care for pescado.

Have a great time!!

restaurants....ferndandos....local food and very reasonable (great pollo guisado etc...dinner runs about 200 pesos). Da nancy is damn good....that was a bit more pricey tho...but we got the seafood rice for two (with lagostina, pulpo, calamari, shrimp...u name it), plus an appetizer and a bottle of wine....that dinner cost nearly 1000 pesos for 2...but it was a feast!.

Its too bad that german restaurant in the main plaza closed....it was REALLY good...great freshly baked bread..my friend said that they might re-open tho.

If you read around the board..because of the economy...prices HAVE risen quite a bit...especialy at the restaurants. So sorry...no $5 lobster (tho i dont think it was ever THAT cheap).

I think your friend might have over painted the picture that is boca chica. It is kinda fun...its kinda like coney island with no rides...but a nicer beach....and lotsa ho's.....seedy but kinda fun...just have to have your wits about you.

you MIGHT do well with the touristy women tho. You said you are at last part cubano....and very young....so you MIGHT find some luck there. I am strictly an observer on this one tho...as i dont go to go chica chasing....but i've hung out with some of those guyz.

Your budget seems a bit lean (just a few hundred) if you are running there to get layed. I can easily get by for about 500 usd for about 10 days....i just wouldnt want to get find myself "stuck" there with no $$.

One word of advise if you are going to hang on the beach durring the day....make sure you settle your price before you sit at any table or chair on the beach. i have gotten into some really fierce arguments with a couple of people on the beach.

Send me a PM and i will tell you more about BC....and hey..im in NYC...so we can even telephone eachother and i can give you my realistic advise.

well...i look forward to checking out the north part of the island on my next trip...i just tend to keep on going back to BC cuz i met someone who is NON sankie that i like.

**You said "whilst".

**You won't pay $8. If you are going for any length of time a few hundred $ won't get you very far though.

Anyways I spoke to miguel in spanish when I first called, I'm guess being from around nyc I'm not used to everything being all laid back.

**And he said you have a room, in Spanish, ergo, you have a room.

Anybody recommend any places to go in boca chica or restaurants to eat? I've been told cosmos is good.

**Cosmos is a hooker pickup bar and deafeningly loud music and smoky. Ear protection and a respirator is my advice. I have been to BC maybe 25 times and in Cosmos twice. For maybe 5 minutes each time.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm gonna try my luck with some of the tourist girls and some of the local girls too. If the local girls turn out the be hoes oh well... It's not like anybody back home will know

**Yeah, lots of tourist guys say that about the tourist girls and you seem to never read reports of the conquests. I wonder why that is? Some local girls ( few) will turn out not to be on the game. if they are over 40 then they aren't for sure, reasonably sure anyway.

As far as spanish skills, I can speak spanish okay but sometimes I forget words.

** A few $8 Presidentes and you'll forget a few more. Take a lot of good US condoms and get ID from the girlies, as they won't allow you to bring them in without REAL ID.

Hrm... judging by these responses I guess I should have mentioned that I'm not going to boca chica for an extended stay (I dont have much vacation time at my current job and was lucky to be able to get 2 days off :nervous: ). I'm just going there for a long weekend type trip. Basically 3 nights and then coming back home on the fourth night. How much money would I need in $USD and out of that money how much should I convert to pesos$? When I last talked to my co-worker he said $150-$200 should be more than okay as far as spending money (not hotel or tranportation) is concerned for the three nights there but I'm thinking I should bring more money just in case.

Also.... How are the club and casino at the Hamaca. I heard it's only like $10 to get in there and it's all you can drink but it's for guests only during the high season? I also heard that the minimum bet at the Hamaca is something like $2 dollars converted to pesos?
