Many people don't have idea about the condition that Dominican Hospital are having, but just to read that Rats and Cucarachas are having party at the waiting room, it's reason enought to keep been healthy in the DR.

Ashamed and disappointed about the politic organization plus that, where every single Dominicans and foreign mostly living or traveler pay their taxes.

Even needle crisis,

Does any foreign or Dominican down there had visit a Public Hospital latetly, what was the condition?

Thanks

Clinica Abreu

In May, I was in Santo Domingo and got a really bad case of tachycardia. My heartbeat was very fast and out of sync completely. A friend of mine rushed me to Clinica Abreu where I went to the emergency desk and told them what I had. Immediately, two nurses had me lay down in a small room and hooked me up to an electrocardiogram machine. In a few minutes, a Dr. Lopez was checking my vitals and reading the results of the electro. She told me that my heartbeats were a bit too fast and ordered medication. After about 45 minutes rest, I felt much better, so she sent me home with
a referral to a local cardiologist. Then I was asked to go and pay for the emergency services which i thought would be throught the roof. I was charged all of $29.75 for their service! The attention was excellent and definitely worth the twentynine dollars. I dread to think what I would have had to pay in the states for once in Orlando they charged me $279.00 for five minutes of attention and a prescription for a cough medicine.

Money Talks

That $30 you paid was pocket change to one of us but yet how many people in the DR can't even afford that.
I don't have a point just an observation. My question is how much of the trouble with the DR hospitals is the fact that they cant afford the supplies they need but if you are willing to pay cash they can some how come up with everything because your visit may just finance three or four poor peoples visits?

In all my years travelling to the Dominican Republic, this was the first time that I have been in a hospital as a patient. I guess that what surprised me and my point/question is the following: How can private clinics (at least Clinica Abreu) afford to charge such cheap rates for their services? A previous poster indicated paying $12 to see a specialist. These costs would be outrageous in any emergency ward in the states unless you had medical insurance.

lawyers

When I was a kid and went tot he Doctor my mother paid $15 a visit to our town doctor. Now with malpractice liability and so forth if a doctor does not do and MRI for a headache he is open to second guessing by some lawyer. In the DR a doctor more than likely is paid for his time for performing a service. He is not being prepayed to settle your lawsuit against him.
Medicaid and Medicare also hurt.

I had the misfortune to contract "walking pneumonia" on a recent road trip in Mississippi. I was treated with IV antibiotics at a rural Hospital, total time in ER 8 hours, cost Four Thousand three hundred dollars ($4,300.00)

Clear

I know its a hard conversation to deal with, but people in this board who doesn't know about public hospital condition in DR, is better that they know.

It will take really long for the DR goverment learn how to use founds with out ask money to other country. Not matter where you go in the DR always you pay your tax or most of the time direct or indirect. Buying gas, going to the super market, stores, etc. The same thing about people who have business.

Another way that the DR gov. generate money are:

1-) Airport = Departure and arriving tax + custom. (Regarding we have at
the least 6 International airport.

2-) Province conection "Driving from Santo Domingo to east, north and south coast" What I remenber every car pay $15 pesos every time the pass.

3-) Importing and Exporting

5-) Turism

Some times I think that the DR in next 50 years from now will have the same problems.

Hospitals

I am very sad to see thoses hospital conditions.
The goverment doesn t give a dime about an ambulance can help to
save life !! thoses doesn t run of a lack of gas !! So therefore you have to
brink your urgent patient ex:(heart attact) by your own means to the closer
goverment hospital ( EX; SAN-FRANCISCO DE MACORIS ) . When they get in
touch of the patient first thing lets take a pulse in your arms !! and of
coarse the machine doesn t work as usual !! so its a bad feeling .
Some doctor says : I worked before in Chicago , U.S.A. and then i wonder to say what are you doing in this jungle brother ?? he says I love my country
or did it had better in R.D. to profess unsted of passing U.S. test ??
No air to cool down thoses hot mixed beds where 2 to 3 peoples are sharing
you need something ?? we don t have anything in the hospital; so go
at the next pharmacie or drug store and buy the goodies to save your family
life !! If you don t have any money just thing of better futur just die !!
This country is advertising to bring a lot of tourists to the R.D. This year
it is more than 3 millions of foreings boddies that shall enjoy the R.D.
That means a lot of bread for the goverment !!
In the country -side , small poor vilages at school they don t give any more
a quart of milk for the kids !! NO MONEY SAYS THE GOVERMENT OF HIPOLYTO
MEIJA !! HA HA HA !! BANKS LOST THEIRS VALUES ,
Does the people as to pay for it or the rich elite goverment ??
By the way why to give free phone to generals, 4x4 cars ect... when
the poor pueble as nothing to feed themself with ??
my question is : Are you still brothers dominicano or you want to destroy
yourself ??? let me know

Public Hospitals vs. Private Clinics

Major difference here and you really have to know a little about each one.

There is a nice story in today's DR1 News about the Robert Reid Children's Hospital and it seems, in spite of everything to be doing OK..It still has problems, but it is doing a lot of good.

The Maternity hospital is surviving. Most of the others ar not so hot and I'd hate to get hurt in anywhere else but Santiago. The Regional University Jos? Maria Cabral y B?ez Hospital is okey. The administrator is a dedicated physician and most of the staff are very concientious. And most of the residents are fom PUCMM so they are good, too. However, as to medicines and supplies, they have the same shortages (perhaps less pilferage) as the other hospitals.

Private clinics can, on many occasions, privide outstanding care for patients with insurance or money in their pocket..The point about malpractice insurance is very well taken and has a lot to do with cost.

I don't think we are talking about the same things

Please, I have been in Calcutta and not even the worst countryside in the DR is even close to that hellhole.

The OP is asking about hospitals. In the countryside (by the way, where are you located?), there are these little clinics that are visited-supposedly on a regular basis- by medical personnel from the hospitals and from other agencies. Every provincial capital has a hospital and many other cities have these hospitals too. They are not much but they can provide primary care for emergencies, and they do a lot of births and apendectomies(?) and set broken bones...BAsically first aid stations. And not many people are more than an hour and a half from a hospital.

Does government waste bother you? Well, write about it and get it in your press and around the world. That is the only thing the politicians evr listen to.
