Could our Dream become a reality???

Hi,

Hubby and I have decided that we have had enough of the UK and want to move abroad and are currently considering DR having had a number of hols there. We will of course have to do a lot more homework before we finally decide and of course visit the country again but we would appreciate it if you could provide some insight into living in DR.

Firstly, I understand from previous posts that obtaining residency is a relatively easy thing to do and we need to have some money either in a bank account or purchase a property - is there a minimum amount needed here?

Secondly, could we live on ?500 ($850) a month assuming that we have no rent/mortgage?

Thirdly, we are planning on selling our main house in the UK and using the spare cash to buy two houses in DR; one to live in and one to rent to supplement our above income. Are rentals good in DR? Should we perhaps consider a B&B instead?

Finally, what are your views on the pros and cons of living in the DR - some honest feedback would be appreciated.

We are both in our early 30's and really really want to get out of the rat race here in the UK and from what we have read so far, it looks possible. However, we do appreciate that things are not always what they seem so any direct advice would be great.

Thanks.

Any good general would send out a scouting party first

Please do some research in the Search Function of these pages, there is a huge quantity of information on just this subject there.

Also give serious thought to sending one or the other of you two here to "check things out" and get a feel for real, true local life. You should look at different venues, since the options are extremely varied in this country. There are mountains, valleys, semi-desert, lush tropical forests...big cities, little cities...

Such a move at your age is a wonderful thing to plan and carry out, but please be wise and take it very slow. Remember, tropical waters are full of sharks...

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Whilst we are "excited" at the potential, we wouldn't dream of selling up and moving until we have spent some real quality time in the country.

Any such move would not be for another 2 years and at this stage we are just trying to get a feel for general costs, peoples views etc - we have searched the site but some of the posts seem to conflict - hence the reason for posting again.

Any views on our initial monthly budget or plans to rent out a property are appreciated - if this is not doable in DR then we may need to amend our "top 3" list!

Just looking for some general advice at this stage, good or bad.

Thanks again.

We moved out from UK 12 years ago, & we're still here! So that tells you something(& it isn't that we're not permitted to re-enter uk!).
Giving yourselves a 2 year advance notice period is good -a) sufficient time to do your homework, b) time for the country to begin to get back to normal after last 4 years & most importantly c) time for you to make several visits down here to different areas.
Please, rent first, before you buy property. Day to day living is also different from your reconnaisance trips, you want to be certain it is the place for you.
Good luck & start learning Spanish if you don't have it already.

Just realised that Hillbilly & I have both responded to you in Legal Forum but post contents are the same.....perhaps the 2 threads should be amalgamated?
