Hi at all,

I am here in SD since 3 weeks, living at Hotel Metur at ciudad universitaria.
Besides attending a school for learning the language, I enjoyed the living near malecon with all its activities very much.
I am going to spend 1 week in POP, have been there never before.
Anybody knows a nice place to stay there near the center of activities like here in Santo Domingo ?

Thank You

Stefan

Puerto Plata Beach Resort & Casino a bit further up the Malecon (& a bit further away from town) is RD $1,000 or RD $1,300 depending on location of room!! - Grahame.

Mind you that the malecon in Puerto Plata is nothing like the Malecon in Santo Domingo, unless there is some special event going on. And as far as I know, there is no particular "center of activities" in POP equalling the Malecon in Sto.Dgo. You'd better have a closer look at Sosua or Cabarete instead. But if you do go to POP, the Aparthotel Lomar is a nice place to stay.

Hello Stefan,

I will give you the link to a listing of various hotels in Puerto Plata city. They're all reasonably priced. Unfortunately I haven't yet stayed at any of them because we've always gone the AI route but hopefully next time. Here it is http://www.puertoplataguide.com/Accommodations.html

I'm also very interested in hearing more about you're experiences at the spanish school. I'm starting to do some planning about how I want to finish off my spanish studies (at my CDN Uni) with a month or few at a spanish school in the DR. I've found lots of websites of ones in Santiago, Sosua and Santo Domingo but it'd be nice to get some first-hand observations of what it was like and what to expect.

So if you could please email me my address is cruzincanadiancutie@hotmail.com and I have messenger as well so if you have the same feel free to add me.

Cheers,

Dawn aka Alba

PS If anyone else has some first-hand experiences with any of the spanish school's in the DR I'd be happy to hear from you too!

Stephan, how was your stay at Metur? Would you recommend it? Also, do they provide any laundry service? I don't know if you are still in DR or went back to your country. BTW, how is your Spanish now?

I hope you see this message.

Been to Loar 3 times, perfect and they will bend over backward to make you happy for less than 20 USD per night. Good food, very clean, cable TV, telephone, refrigerators, plenty of hot water, freezsing remote control A'c, minutes to everything

Stephan,

I can verify what Paulino said about the Malicon in Puerto Plata being in no way comparable to the one in SD. The "activities" (night life?) in PP are scattered throughout the city.

That being the case, you may want to consider another hotel option which is not as conveniently located, but which is IMHO the best value in town. The Hotel Sensacion is located on the Carratera, just past the entrance to Costumbar, about 3 k from downtown PP. Yes, they do have cabanas there, but they also have 8 beautiful apartementes with AC, tv, telephone and a great pool which go for the ridiculiously low price of RD600 a night. In addition they have 24/7 room service at very reasonable prices. If you have a car, the location is no problem. If not, there are actually several night clubs close bye, but it is a bit far from a lot of the activities.

Well, I would say, Metur is a very spezial place. Its in a quiet side street, just some steps away from corner Independencia/Maximo Gomez. In front they have a porch shaded by a tree, which is sort of a meeting point for guests and occasinally some German expats.
Owner is a German, Kurt Brumby, kitchen is run by his wife, offering meals at an reasonable price.
The rooms in the old building are pretty basic, despite most have A/C, when I left, there was construction work going on.But You know, what A/C is worth right now. Best advice is to have a room with balcony and windows on the other side. Like No. 22 ;)
Having booked for 4 weeks, I was offered a good discount on a room with A/C and fridge, which is usually rated at 25 US$ a day.
Combined with the near IDEAL location to malecon and school I did not regret my choice.
To get an idea of locations, I was offerred to take me around the town and vicinity for $ 50 from 10 am to 5 pm...by one of the staff in their minibus.

Not to forget that i liked the possibility to have breakfast at one of the stalls in front of the university very early, have a walk on the malecon afterwards and then prepare for the school.
They do landry too, just check with Mrs. Brumby or room-maid.
I am back in Germany right now, have things to do and enjoying the autumn, which is, IMHO the best time of the year in Germany.

My spanish is just very basic, what else to expect after a basic course and refraining all the possibilities to get hooked up with friends of friends for the matter to improve on a day/night basis :bandit:

Stephan,

I would also like to thank you for the report on Hotel Metur. I want to spend some time in SD, and it seems that reasonably priced accomodations are hard to find. I have seen their website, and was considering them as an option. After reading your report, I think I will give it a try.

You've gotten some good recommendations on hotels in POP here. I have stayed in most of the places mentioned, and would repeat that except for the location, the Sensacion is by far the best value. When I stay there I have to pinch myself to be sure I'm not dreaming to be staying in such a nice place for 15 dollars a night. If you really want to be on the Malecon, I would recommend the Lormar.

What is the information on the language school you attended and the cost?

Pretty interesting place I think !
I made it once to POP Malecon and Long Beach and found it not very inviting.
Maybe I was preoccupied by the comments of Sosua expats or I choose just the wrong time at daylight.
I?ll give it another try next time, I am sure some day I am going to catch the hidden charme of the place.
Musing about the guagua experience at my trip to the POP malecon, I wonder whether I should write it down sometimes :glasses:

About the language school in SD check

http://www.edase.com/english/home.htm
Thats the school I attented.

There is another one at Zona Colonial, don`t know about the quality, just had a chat with the office staff, nice girls by the way :))

http://www.hispaniola.org/

Funny thing is, they are so hard to find, that it took 2 attempts, 1 fruitless phone call and 2 taxidrivers as well as some other locals to discover them in a hostal at the corner of the addressed street, no sign nowhere, numbers not matching. Oh well !

Perfect

Thanks, this was a great help. I?m going to SD the last week of January, and then two weeks Sosua/POP. Hotel Metur sounds like the place for my budget. Sencacion is interesting too, though I probably would prefer something in Sosua.

I don?t know any Spanish, so I have been looking at IIC, especially because they are teaching both places where I?m going.

Stephan,
Did you start at scratch, and were you satisfied with IIC? I?m looking forward to hear about you guagua story.

My last spanisch lesson was some 30 years ago, so I really began from scratch.
I think its a good idea, to learn the ususal daily phrases before you come DR.
They won?t teach them at school at first like I was expecting. They start with grammar rightaway.
You should bring your own dictionary too, you are going to need it for homework.
They will recommend you some auxiliary booklets to pay extra for. Even they are not essential, BUY them !
Join the activities they are suggesting, going out, etc.
All in all I was quite satisfied, despite I had a hard time to follow the lessons especially the last hour. I lacked concentration because of the heat, beeing not a youngster anymore did the rest.
I was lucky to find a student coaching me occasionally in the afternoon, pretty convinient that he was a guest in Metur also.

Have a good time and my regards to all the staff at CASA GOETHE !

Link Guest House Esmaralda

Andy, in your opinion, what makes Guest House Esmeralda a better choice than Metur? Also, it's kind of confusing because the other day I was looking at a website for Metur and the same building was pictured. Also, the fact that one used to be Metur II, makes it even more confusing. Perhaps some website/information needs to be updated.

How much are the rooms at Esmeralda and how do their services differ from or compare to those offered by Metur?
