Need Help - Moving to Santo Domingo...

I have a job I am going to take in Santo Domingo. I am in the process of figuring out where I should live in the city. I have only been there once and thought it quite nice. I was intrigued by the "old" part of town and thought I would be great to live in an old colonial building with courtyard in the middle. So I guess I really would just like to hear some advice. Where are the best/safest parts of town to live. I am from New York and would love to be in an area where there were people on the streets and some good nightlife. The office is going to be moving so I am not sure where work will be at this point. I am willing to spend up to about $1000 per month on rent. Would love to be near a beach also if possible, but seemed like SD was all Malecon. Anyway - if I seem confused about what I want -- it's because I am. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ps - i will have a car so adequate parking/safety is a concern.

First off don't say how much you are willing to spend.

That is a whole lot of money , and you should be able to find something really nice flr less than half of that.

I think that the folks in Santo Domingo would recomment that you first rent some small place and get oriented. THEN go out and find your perfect spot in the Zona Colonial. Otherwise, they will sell you the Brooklyn Bridge, so to speak....

Good luck, sounds like you got yourself a good thing going.

Welcome to Santo Domingo

I would suggest you forget the idea of leaving in the Colonial Zone. It looks pretty and all but first; it is hard to find an apartment in the Zone, parking would be almost impossible and most important, you will want to find an apartment with security and Full Planta, as these days electricity can be out for up to 15 hours a day. I also heard that water is hard to come by in the Zone as you are dealing with old constructions. With the amount you are willing to pay, I would suggest you look more into these neighborhoods: Gazcue (near Colonial Zone), Naco, Piantini, El Milion, etc? NightLife is all over town so anywhere you go you?ll find it. As for the beach; the closest one is Boca Chica at 30 minutes away and Juan Dolio at 45 min. Hope it helps! :cheeky:

Thanks - more questions...

Didnt mean to sound crass about how much I am willing to pay...I know it is alot for the country...I guess that is just a very common thing here in New York. (craigslist --people get annoyed at posts when they dont say how much they are willing to pay).

Anyway - thanks for they help - sounds like the old part of town is out. I would like to live somewhere near water...but I guess parking/safety/electricity trump a cool old building. Are there realtors that I could contact? I literally have to move there and start work so unfortunatley will not have much time to figure things out...

Any help is much appreciated...

Can I move in with you?

If you like the sea view than, mmmm?..I would look into moving close to the Malecon, they have some really nice apartments with Sea View. I would try to inquire about the Malecon Center. It is this new humongous construction they are doing right on the Malecon, I am not sure how you would go about renting an apartment in the building but I?m sure it is out there. You could start by looking here in the leasing section http://www.remaxsantodomingo.com/remax.html , or in the classified section of the Newspapers:
http://www.listindiario.com.do/clasificados/
http://www.super-casas.com/(db3as1b41x22sdnpquehnj3z)/reg/do/home.aspx?f=1

But of course the best would be to rent something for a week or so and look around in person, so you can see the different neighborhoods first and get a taste for it! Enjoy!

One other random question...can you get cell phones that work in the US and Dominican? Right now I am on Verizon. Thank you very much -

apt living in Santo Domingo

I come tom Sto Domingo one week every month (from Toronto Canada)
I intend to retire here and set up a couple of business ventures.

I have recently purchased a beautiful apt in NACO, 3 bedrooms with ensuites,
maid's quarter marble everywhere, central air-con, granite kitchen etc.
One apt per floor! Price $145,000.

It took me a lot of time to find the right one. Meanwhile instead of renting asn apt-hotel I staid at the Clarion Hotel in Naco.\

If you negotiate a bit, you can get a suite (quite large with 2 TV kitchen etc.)
for US $80 . all taxes included and it includes breakfeast buffet.

I would highly recommend the place.

As for realtor I have been very well served by a RE max man.
If you want his name, I will let you know.

You also need an honest lawyer...I also have a a good one perfectly bilingual
went to school at NY U!!

Hopes this help
:) :)
