Take into account the aftercare. Also the travel costs and the peace of mind factor. How much is Lasik in NY? Availability to the latest technology and procedures? If we are only talking a few hundred dollars difference, is it worth the risk?

The DR has a few good Ophthalmologists, but they do not have the numbers (amount of procedures) as some of their counter parts in NY or Miami.

Practice makes perfect!

I agree, but for those of us who live in the DR and can't afford to travel, I think it's a bit easier to get it done down here... ;)

Gimabella,
You should also consider driving to Toronto or Montreal, Canada. I have seen prices for Lasik around $900 CDN per eye. With the current exchange rate, that should around $660 USD. Got mine done in Montreal for less than $1000 CDN per eye.

Just a tought.

He is (or was)located on the second floor of the Bella Vista Clinic behind the Clinica Gomez Patino on Ave. Independencia.

Mine cost USD$700 for one eye, and he had done more than 20,000 procedures before me. BTW, this was about 7-8 yrs. ago.

I was absolutely impressed by the whole operation. It is a miracle to see people come in with coke bottle glasses and walk out crying with happiness.

I recommend him 100%

JD, what was your post-op script?

Well, my sights down to -4.25 in each eye and I can't see diddlysquat at night so if anything it's gotta get better! lol It's good to know that there's someone safe to "see" in the DR.

Thx!

Don't take chances with your eyesight!

Absolutely. What is your vision worth?

I can't imagine for a moment price shopping a procedure like this. The experience of the surgeon should be the first priority, and location/proximinity/convenience second, and price LAST! So what if it was $1000 or $5000... it's your eyes!

While complications aren't that common, they do occur. An infection... a loose flap, an enhancement required after weeks or months. Having your Dr. close by if problems arise is priceless.

Really, you should try to save up and combine your procedure with your next christmas shopping trip to NY. My wife had an eye lasiked down in the DR and it's cost us much more $$$ seeing all kinds of specialists in NY trying to undo the damage, loose flap got infected, very messy. Still can't see out of that eye worth a darn, no way is she letting anyone touch her other eye, her contact does her just fine. The doctors in NY who looked at her eye, just shake there heads at the poor work that was attempted. I know that's not what you asked, but be careful, be very careful.

Hi guys,

I am going through the process myself right now and the best advise I can give is to get as much info as you can. Knowing that fulano de tal came out great from other fulano is just not good enough. If you loose your good eyesight you will be more than seriously handicapped. Sometimes it cannot even be corrected with contacts or glasses anymore. Believe me that I came across a couple of stereotype quacks here in DR.

To know what you can expect and what the risks are best visit www.usaeyes.org. of the CRSQA. (I wonder how that is pronounced, (cricksqua?) but it means Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance) these guys really go deep. You will probably not be able to locate a member of them here in DomRep, but they do have a list of "50 tough questions" that your candidate surgeon should not have any objection against answering. If he doesn't cooperate, you know enough. You can compare the answers and see if your candidate has his two feet on the ground or building you air castles. :cross-eye:

Additionally you can check out www.aao.org and www.isrs.org. A decent surgeon will be member of at least one of these orgs. You can find DR based doctor via a simple search on these websites. Make sure that the specialty has to be "Refractive surgery"

Finally, I am still in the stage of examinations, but Dr Carlino Gonzales gives me a very good impression. Perfectionalist, open minded, good refs and seems to hide nothing, even if less pleasant to hear. Has his data always checked by a colleague. See www.carlinovision.org.

Success!!!

Success Gima,

I would have done the same. Consider to use Crcksqua to find your best surgeon.

I had laser surgery done on both eyes by Dr Carlino Gonzales in June this year. If anyone in the DR is thinking of having this done I would recommend visiting him first. He gave me a through examination to determine if I was suitable for surgery and fully explained, what to, and what not to expect . I was not under any pressure to proceed. He speaks perfect English which is also a bonus.

After surgery you need to return 1 month, 3 months and 6 months for check-ups, therefore I would not recommend getting this done here if you live outside the DR. I think I paid around US$900 for both eyes.

In my case, my eyesight did not improve immediately after surgery, it has taken 3 months to improve and may take a further 3 months to improve further. I now have to use eye drops 5-6 times a day which is a pain in the butt. The good news is: NO MORE GLASSES.

Another good info source is

A newsgroup called alt.sci.med.vision.

For relative newcomers to the Internet this is not a "web site," but a "News Group."

When I was researching and preparing for Lasik about 5 years ago I found a wealth of information here. You'll hear some good scare stories too, but it's all part of being informed.

It's your eyes, and you can't grow new ones!

To make some of you laugh, I paid $4400 for both eyes about 5 years ago. At that time they weren't doing both eyes at the same time... a week apart.

Worth every penny. Opthamalogic surgeon normally doing corneal transplants and such who was expanding into the relatively new Lasik procedure. Also at that time the US FDA had just barely approved Lasik for
myopia beyond 5 diopters refractive error. (I was -7.5)

I could have gone to Canada and saved about $2500, but why the hell would I have done that? I must have ended up with 12 doctor visits or so before all was done.

In my opinion, it seems like they really crank people through the procedure now, but I don't hear of many problems.
