Which is the best supermercado in Puerto Plata for selection and price? We will be staying at a resort in Playa Dorada in January for a couple weeks and plan on cooking about half of our meals in the room. Two years ago we shopped at a small store a few blocks from central park and at a large supermercado (I believe it was Messa) about a 5 or 10 minute walk from central park. From the gua gua ride into Puerto Plata we saw supermercado Tropical, but didn't check it out.

Our purchases will consist of muchos presedente and rum, fruit, veggies, breads and pastries, deli meats, pasta and rice. We would really like to find some nice shrimp or lobster (frozen or fresh) - we were not very successful on finding this last time.

We already have all our restaurants picked out from searching this site but could use some help with the grocery shopping.

Thank you in advance!

I get my meat from Tropical & virtually everything else from Silverio Messon, Gordo. You may notice some changes at Messon's in the 2 years since you were last there.........much bigger than before. If you go on a Tuesday morning, it is 2 packets of green veggies for the price of one. Even if you are not going to consume that amount, the maid cleaning your room would probably appreciate it (but not in lieu of a tip!).
You can get fresh & frozen shrimp at Messon's.

POP - Supermercado Tropical; then Jose Luis

Most foreigners prefer 'Tropical'; most believe that the meat is fresher; probably true. I prefer 'Jose Luis' for non meat items; more selection, more nicely laid out. For a 2 week stay, I think that you'd be happy with Tropical. Enjoy!!

What Time Share Resort will you be staying at in Playa Dorada That still allows cooking?
All of the Resorts now to the best of my knowledge have converted to mandatory all Inclusive, The reason I ask is it is a big money maker for them @ $35.00 to $ 50.00 US a day per person
There cost runs around $8.00 a Day per person.

Hours

The "Big three" super mercados observe the same hours in Puerto Plata. Open nightly till 9 except Sunday 8 till noon. Doesn't seem to be any regulation on store operating hours, must be a gentlemen's agreement of some sort.

Try staying in Puerto Plata or Sosua and save big time.

We bought our vacation club at Paradise Beach Club and Casino 5 years ago while we still thought that all-inclusive was the best thing since sliced bread. We have since done a 180 and if we never see an all inclusive buffet again it will still be a day too soon! We do anticipate some resistance from the hotel but we have a contract - all-inclusive is optional not mandatory! They have bugged us on every fax and check-in with regards to upgrading our contract to all-inclusive but we are holding out - they won't suck another penny out of us. Two years ago we were the only tourists at the resort with a different color wrist band. If we knew what we know now, we never would have bought into a vacation club time share in the first place and would stay at smaller condos and hotels, but hindsight is 20/20! With the way things are run in the D.R. odds are we'll get screwed over by the hotel at some point.
