I was wondering if anyone had advice on finding a job in the DR as an American. I will be down there at the end of January. I have graphic design skills, museum experience, teaching....but know very little Spanish.
Will it be very difficult to find work or volunteer work in a museum?
Any ideas/advice? Will people be turned off to hiring an American?

What kind of teaching experience do you have? Tell more of yourself (education, what you have done in the past). I know of a job teaching English to 7th-12th graders. Pay not much... probably about RD$15,000 a month, but if you like teaching, this is a challenge. Kids are almost fluent in English, so the level is not low and you can do perfectly with no Spanish.

More info...

Thanks Dolores for your response. I am just finishing a Masters degree in Museum Education here in NYC. It covers general education classes and I had to student teach in a 3rd and 4th grade class....planning lessons, organizing field trips, etc. I have also done some subsitute teaching as well.

Currently I am working at a design firm that develops exhibits for museums, mainly children's museums. In addition, I do graphic design work for publications and online work.

Are you a teacher?

Sounds like you could qualify for the job. I am not a teacher. I am the editorial director of dr1.

Send your cv to dolores@dr1.com

Could you come earlier? It is for a job that has just come open at my sons' school.

sounds pretty interesting. i'm graphic designer, photographer and video production specialist. also having museum experience. i'm interested in moving to DR. what are the opportunities? virtually any kid of work is acceptable, as long as related to visual arts. from portraiting over photo work to design or art lessons. i already worked on some courses, but don't have formal qualifications to work as a teacher in school. but, private lessons or courses in small private school are acceptable. i speak some spanish. no fluido, pero no malo tambien. estudio desde julio. i'm serbian. i gor fed up of europe and am in love with this continent! i can move to DR at any time!

The school is looking for an English language teacher and a French language teacher. They would require these to be your first language and are looking for teaching experience.

Here's a tip:
In Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo, there is an educational museum for children. It is called "Museo Infantil Trampolin".

Website: http://www.trampolin.org.do

Maybe they can use your skills? Your background certainly seems perfect for this place!

Be sure to visit it when you come to DR !!! I think the address is Calle Damas something...

I was there a month ago. You get your own guide and he/she takes you on a tour of the displays. It is aimed at kids, but informative and fun also for grown-ups. The guide I had, spoke very good English and was very knowledgeable about the displays.

Check it out!

Santo Domingo. I understand they already filled the French position. Vacancies open up in spring at many of the bilingual or foreign language schools in Santo Domingo.

Any other oppourtunities

I have a background is business administration and law enforcement. What kind of oppourtunities are available for someone like me. I saw a private investigation company that looks kind of interesting. Anything else?
