This could be very good for the DR, especially if they can push Caucedo as the main hub in the Caribbean.

For those of you that don't know, this is what you see to your right when your standing on the beach in Boca Chica.

So, what's the deal? Details?

That is not a big port really. There was some guy at Flemming's bar in BC who told my husband that Pta. Caucedo was the biggest port in the world... which made my husband giggle. ;)

Why is (DPI) a Middle Eastern Company's acquisition of Caucedo(CSX) good for DR?

It means somebody is interested in the viability of the area.

The DR is in a direct ocean cargo route between Panama and US, Panama and Europe/Mideastern countries. It only stands to reason a good ocean terminal within the route with access to container storage/consolidation, warehousing, and free trade zones with inexpensive labor can only be a boon.

It means steamship/cargo lines can offload containers from one ship for storage or to be tranferred to another ship. Goods can be brought here for distribution or improved in the free trade zones for reshipment to a final destination.

A good port and port operations means investment in the country. What the DR has in this port is: location, location, location.

PJT

This is good! Just sorry it is not Puerto Plata... ;) There is a regular poster on the board who could tell us more about the middle-eastern interests in shipping in our area of the world. Perhaps he is in a position to tell use more but perhaps not...

Don't Panic.....

This is not a takeover bid by a Middle East company - DPI are simply in the business of International Ports Management and Puerto Caucedo is a very small part of their purchase of CSXWT business worldwide. However, DPI/DPA in Dubai have an excellent track record of making transhipment and container business work, just look at their portfolio, and I have no doubt that they will increase the throughput of containers in Caucedo by sheer hard work, good management skills and the experience of having done the same thing in a number of other ports in the world. This company will now be one of the 6 top major players in he world in the business of port management.
With the continued support of the DR Government the growth potential for Caucedo is very high and it is possible for the DR to become the Singapore of the Americas - this can only be good for the DR as we will gain economic benefit from port transactions.
Bring back the shipping lines and transhipment business to DR by efficient management, quick turnaround times, honest and transparent buusiness practice, etc. and people will use Caucedo as their hub thereby cutting out the business currently in Jamaica and Havana.
Think of the potential steady regular employment for DR locals as Caucedo develops?
With homeland security fears in the US and the Cuban embargo there is a certain opportunity for DR becoming a container hub. The DR is in an ideal natural position/location to be able to take advantage of this.
I would quote here from another DR1 poster to highlight the potential for the DR -"How many products from third countries go to the ports of New York, Miami, and Norfolk before hitting the Caribbean Basin? How many shiploads of containers must be split up and reloaded on other ships prior to heading off to new destinations? SDQ is much more centrally located in the Caribbean than Havana is, also SDQ faces the Caribbean Sea (quicker routes from the Canal to SDQ than HVN) and the Mona Passage is a stones throw away, allowing ships to come and go from the Atlantic Ocean much quicker than going all the way to Havana."
Another quote - "The DR is located at the exact centre of the Antilles and the Hemisphere. The country stands in the way of two of the world's major shipping routes (The Panama Canal - US/Europe route and the US - South America route, ships along both routes eventually pass within less than 10 miles from Dominican shores, passing either through the Windward Passage between Hispaniola and Cuba and/or the Mona Passage between the DR and Puerto Rico). The DR now has the largest maritime port in the Caribbean and Central America, Puerto Caucedo. It is expected to be used as a transshipment point for all products coming from or heading through the Panama Canal."
It ain't gonna happen overnight but the efficiency of Caucedo will improve under DPI's management and the business is all about moving containers in the fastest time possible! Do that and the shipping lines will be clamouring for berths in the DR!
