I would appreciate information on transfers from Santo Domingo (airport) to Canoa Coral by Hilton. What is the cost? What's second least expensive means over transport by mule? :) I've read posts of $80 each way by taxi. Is that the going rate? Is public transportation an option? How do get transfer service on our way back? Many thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

What city is it in? Juan Dolio should be about $30 or so, it's $18 to Boca Chica and I think another 12-15 past that to JD.

It's in La Romana. Taxi service websites quote ~$80 from the international airport in Santo Domingo to La Romana. Looking for a less expensive alternative if one exists.

Given the distance that is not an unreasonable price. There are no buses other than guaguas and they don't leave the airport anyway, and would be a daunting trip frankly. You cannot fly into LRM directly? That's what most La Romana visitors do vs. SDQ. AA flies to LRM still.

You can have the hotel arrange a taxi back on the day you leave - allow a LOT of time in case the driver is a no show plus checking in at SDQ other than in First Class is a mess at all times.

Thanks, Rick. Original plan was to stay at Hamaca and AA non-stop JFK-SDQ was very fair at $290 at the time. Plans changed any we're now booked at Canoa Hilton. The 1 1/2 hour or so ride doesn't bother us. Off topic, but any idea if there are casinos in La Romana (nearby to Canoa Hilton)? Thanks.

Since the high roller HQ of the whole DR is Casa de Campo which is also in LRM, I would have to think there must be casinos if not in your hotel then there.

This is so funny

A real nice guy has been asking me questions about Golf and ciggars, and he is going to stay in the Hilton in Juan Dolio. I tell him La Romana is the place!

This guy is interested in Casinos and he is going to stay in La Romana. And we tell him that Juan Dolio is the place!!

I wish they would just switch!

For sure the deal will not be a rosy with 160 dollars added on for taxis...Better off changing flights and paying that 160 $ to AA....

HB :D:D???

Yeah I know....that stinks!

That seems a trifle high since it's only $18 to Boca Chica and you are about the same distance away to JD, under $40 would be fair. A moot point for the savvy traveler who if going to LRM actually FLIES to LRM. I wonder if airfare to, say Ethiopia was $99 if people would fly there then take a rug freighter to La Romana?

Heh,heh,heh, Good one Rick!!

Yes it is a kittle high but the taxistas in Juan Dolio are charging $50 from JD to the airport so the taxis at the airport are charging $40-50 also.
Don't know when you were down last but that's the price as of Oct.
We had someone we know drive us to thhe airport when we left and they're going to pick us up. I'll wager it's gone up to $75 from LRM to JD.

Our airfare was booked prior to our switch to La Romana from Boca Chica. For the hell of it I just checked airfare from JFK-LRM on AA and it's $650 r/t, a stop in San Juan and almost a 9 hour trip on the return. JFK-SDQ for $290. That's $360 savings per person. I don't object to the $80 taxi fare just exploring options. It appears there are two extremes: $8 by Expreso bus or $80 by taxi. Surprised there aren't a bunch of entrepreneurs willing to provide private transport for say $50. Just an observation.

What bus? The SDQ airport has no buses so now you are going by taxi somewhere to get to a bus. You saved $360 so take a taxi, it will be a hellish day if you try to use taxis and buses on the cheap.

Will do. Is there a reputable service you recommend or simply catch the first taxi in line at the airport? Am I correct to understand that rates are posted therefore it really doesn't matter which taxi I approach? Thank you.

Assuming you can speak Spanish and bargain like a Lebanese rug trader you will get to practice both skills rapidemente on arrival. I suggest to avoid any miscomprehension when you settle on a price you write it down on paper and have the driver sign it.

If you want an English speaking driver's name I can send you Jose's number in a PM, if you PM me - he drives for me and I use him for 8-10 hours at a time for US$75. I am sure he'd get to LRM for $80 and at least he'll pick you up. He's in Boca Chica so he can be at the airport in 20 minutes. With a sign with your name and everything.
