I always thought they were singles and couples only....
Club Med was for singles and couples when it started out some 25 years ago. Today it is the country's most children-oriented resort. You do not want to go there if you do not have children.
Another option is the Punta Cana Resort & Club. Was just there last weekend for the first coral garden planting operation and that place is laid back, couples-oriented, although there are families. Since the place is so big, you don't notice the children. There also is option of the golf club house that is almost entirely couples-only.
The bedrooms are spacious, the hotel just recently was totally remodelled, the food was very good. Also enjoyed not having to wear an A-I tag.
In the area you also have the option of the Punta Cana Marina and the Punta Cana shopping mall (championship bowling alley, restaurants and Marana disco-lounge). Do take the ecological walk excursion if you choose this option.
Another plus of this resort is that it is right near the airport -- 10 minutes away, so you are off the plane into your resort.
Secrets is also good option, and I believe the country's only couples only resort of its kind. Was there in December, and the place is lovely, too. The beach is kind of wild, but loved swimming in those waters. Just be careful of the waves.
The food at Secrets is very good, the help is excellent, enjoyed the excellent music of one saxophonist, and the spa is a plus, too.
Secrets is about a 40-minute or so drive from the airport. When there, visit Macao Beach.
About it being an old people place... the crowd that was there when we were there in mid December was 30-50s.
